DIY Saturn to Gamecube Converter?

Post by Space Paranoids »

Howdy! I kind of lurk around and make infrequent posts here. I've wanted to try some modding project for a while, but don't have much technical knowledge or skills. Anyway, the project I've been thinking about lately is putting together a converter that will let me use a Saturn pad on Gamecube/Wii for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, other fighting games, and virtual console games in general. I don't think there's a converter currently on the market that runs directly from Saturn to Gamecube without daisychaining different ones, but making it myself is half the reason I want to do it anyway.
I've found a few different websites that look helpful, but I don't really know how to apply what they say about different systems (USB, PSX) to Gamecube. What I'm looking for is somewhat of a tutorial or guide for Saturn to Gamecube specifically or just controllers in general.

Here's what I have so far:
http://denki.world3.net/pad_converters.html
This is basically what I want to do, but it's for Saturn to PSX, not Gamecube. I could just try building this since it seems like a really nice guide, but as long as it's possible, why not connect straight to the Gamecube?

This accomplishes Saturn to Gamecube conversion, but I'd rather hack up an extension cable or something rather than the actual pad.

Here's another helpful looking guide, but it's for Saturn to USB. This mod is also irreversible. The Controller Primers on this site don't really go into much detail.
I've also tried to look on the Shoryuken forums, but although they seem to have a ton of technical knowledge, you can't search the forum without being registered. I'm still waiting for my confirmation email...

Thanks for your help!

Looks like you're on the right track - petty straightforward. Here's a few more resources:

Also, Slagcoin.com the site the pcb diagrams came from has lots of general knowledge stuff on joystick modding. It focuses on making custom arcade controllers but a lot of the stuff applies to most other modding too.

Good luck.
