Star Wars at Space Camp... What?

I have been to Space Camp before, twice, and it was a nice experience. My personal impression was that it was supposed to educate interested kids about space exploration in an effectively engaging way. As a smaller child, I thought it was pretty awesome. I had a lot of fun and meet some great people.

Then today, I saw this... Why did they think this was a good idea? Wasn't Space Camp supposed to be all about reality, and how far we have come in space travel? Weren't all the innovative activities just as fun? All the rides, all the in-depth simulations, being able to walk inside expensive shit. What happened to all that? Wasn't that good enough? Why would we wanna learn about George Lucas's thoughts at a place like this? Don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars, but there are certain things that shouldn't be put together.

After reading the article, I realized just how unprepared I was for that large amount of cheese. They must have been thinking about nothing but profit on this one.

Lame. I always wanted to go to space camp as a kid, but my parents wouldn't flip the bill. The whole appeal of space camp was that you wanted to learn something about what it might be like to ACTUALLY be an astronaut. Now you will just get harassed by Jar Jar Binks and not learn anything.

I'm fairly certain that space camp was why millions of kids (myself included) wanted to go on various nickolodeon game shows in the mid 90's. Also to win ring pops and various other awesome trinkets.

Space Camp was pretty awesome, went three times in my younger years and it made me Love the idea of space exploration. I sometimes still go back to the rocket museum in Huntsville just for fun.

Now this however...

hmmm...I just can't put into words...how crazy this sounds! Space Camp was a chance to get inside mockups of ships you knew cost hundreds of millions of dollars, that put people at the edge of where we are capable of going, to experience, experiment and discover new things. To train like they did, practice walking on the moon, fixing a satellite, landing a giant shuttle...I guess we just don't get the new crowd. Sure I like star wars but even at it's height of popularity I would not have wanted to be involved in this.

I lived in Huntsville for a decade. The kids that grow up there don't go to Space Camp, and by the time you're 12, you've been to the Space & Rocket Center at least a dozen times. I'm just glad they're getting some new material.

I'll never forget my trip to space camp. It was around 1986, and it was my first trip out of town. I met some pretty cool kids. There was this one girl Tish who was smoking hot, and super-smart. She even had a photographic memory. Kathryn was also in our group, an already experienced pilot, and always seemed to have a crush on this guy Max. Max, was older than I was, but we got along well since we both loved Star Wars. Lastly there was Rudy who was a pretty funny kid, and always talked about science experiments that always seemed to back fire. Anyways, we all formed a tight friendship which would really help us out when a major accident occurred later in our training.

The day started off just like any other, Max tinkered on his robot Jinx, we all had a little bit of space training and we all joked around. We were officially named The Blue Team. We then got the coolest news yet, we would actually have the chance to board an actual spacecraft named Atlantis for an engine test. Had we known what would happen next, we would have never boarded the craft.

Long story short, we were rocketed into orbit by a freak accident. The Atlantis wasn't prepped for space travel, and we ran short of oxygen. Our instructor Andie, who was also in the shuttle, almost sacrificed her life for us by leaving the shuttle to connect another oxygen tank to the Atlantis, which didn't go as planned. After several unfortunate events, Kathryn was able to manually land the shuttle in White Sands, New Mexico.

At least that it is how I remember it. For some reason, it seemed like Tom Skeritt was also there.
