PsOne and Dreamcast - power supply and rf unit

Post by Merz »

I've heard the PsOne (the little white one) and the Dreamcast can use the same power supply and rf unit as a Sega Saturn. Can someone confirm this for me? I found a really cheap one that is console only.

I talking about PAL here btw.

The Saturn and the Dreamcast both use a figure 8 standard power cable, the PSOne uses its own external adapter. The original Playstation uses the standard figure 8 plug.

The PSone, Saturn, Dreamcast all use different pin outs for there AV/RF out so I dont see how, I dont think any of it is compatible with anything other than the Saturn and DC power cable.

The PSone uses a small yellow 1 pin connection for power similar to that of an NES or SNES. The saturn, dreamcast and ps1 (not small psone) all use a generic two pin style connection with no power brick the same as a PS2. This is the case in the US. I am not sure for Europe but I feel like it should be the same. Anyway, I hope this helps!!

DreamCast uses an old "kettle style" mains plug - ie two pins - same as some other electrical equipment uses (eg Sky box). This runs off mains power, and there is a board in the DC that changes 240v AC into 12v DC, 5v DC and 3.3v DC.

The PSone uses a cable adaptor which converts 240v AC into 7.5v DC which goes into the PSone system.

Saturn? Not sure, I have one, not looked at it yet to even check if it works or not!

8bit - the SNES is different - takes in 240v AC and feeds into the console 9V AC (yes, AC not DC); although you can easily mod to use 7.5v DC by connecting directly to the 7805 on the board.

composite mod it and tap off the audio for A/V; it isn't hard.

Composite? The DC already outputs composite, and if you're in Europe it outputs RGB over SCART which 10x better than composite anyway

Indeed, the DC outputs composite and RGB and VGA and also S-video. To get RGB, ground pin 7.
