why do developers hate Nintendo?

Post by Incognito D »

This dawned on me earlier...

we all know about how Square fell out with Nintendo and decided instead to develop for the Playstation, but why do other developers seemingly shun Nintendo for no reason?

A couple of examples I came up with:

Capcom: Were kind of good to the Gamecube with all that nice Resident Evil exclusivity. But why no Street Fighter on a Nintendo console since the SNES days? Street Fighter II was popular as hell on the SNES. I don't get it.

Konami: No Metal Gear Solid (aside from Twin Snakes) or Pro Evolution Soccer. The Gamecube had to make do with ISS.

There are surely more examples but these are just a couple I came up with.

I think capcom are kind to the Wii for the most part. Look at tatsunoko vs. capcom and the resident evil chronicles titles. I'm guessing the lack of street fighter 4/ resident evil 5 is because of graphical limitations. Which I respect, because I'd rather not have them then have dumbed down versions of them

They don't hate Nintendo, theres been plenty of third party support for the Wii and GC. Problem was no one bought the games. Most people buy a Nintendo system for Nintendo games, not third party games. And when no one buys games for a system, the company will cease to make games for it. I personally think that the game selection for the GC and Wii are great and had plenty of third party support despite lower than expected sales.

Here's a short timeline of what happened:

Nintendo releases SNES, good times are had by all
Nintendo releases N64. Developers abandon the platform because of limitations of the cartridge format
Nintendo releases Gamecube. Developers test the waters but on the whole Nintendo fans have gotten used to focusing on the first party stuff.
Nintendo releases Wii. All the "uber" gamers still think the only good stuff is first party. And developers can't release easy (relatively speaking) ports of their PS3/360 stuff because of control differences (to say nothing of the graphical differences)

Aren't the handheld Zelda games by Capcom? At least up until recently I thought they were - the Oracle games and Minnish Cap.

The SNES was not only the most popular among experienced gamers, it was also close enough in tech with the Genesis that games made for the SNES could, more or less, be ported to the Genesis. It was a smart choice to develop for the SNES because it was popular and similar to rival systems. More over, Super Nintendo was building off of the NES, which was very popular for it's third-party support. Games like Mega Man and Castlevania were just as popular as Super Mario Bros and Metroid - in many cases, people actually bought both NES and SNES systems primarily for third-party games.

This is not the case with the Wii. Experienced gamers (as in, those who have been around for at least the last generation) have gone with the Xbox 360 and are recently starting to go with the PS3. Both of those systems are, more or less, able to port games from and to one another. The Wii is it's own island - games made for the Wii can't be easily ported to other systems thanks to controls, and games made for other systems can't be easily ported to the Wii because of technical specifications. The Wii is also directly building off of the N64 and Gamecube, where developer support fell off in a big way thanks to strange choices of media - probably just so Nintendo could overcharge developers for them like they did in the NES/SNES days. Thanks to that, even though the Wii is a pretty easy-to-develop-for system, it isn't worth it because Nintendo has built a reputation for itself as having great First-Party Support and mediocre Third-Party Support.

For this generation, I would say the lack of advertising/promotion (outside the internet) that some of the better third party titles get is likely to be a factor too. It's been terrible in the case of a fair few deserving games.

Yeah, I'd say close to all advertising for Nintendo systems is for first party titles. I saw a couple of ads for that cursed mountain or whatever it was, which showed people playing the game but not the game itself... but that's it really. Most advertising is for 360/PS3 titles, and the 'sponsored by Nintendo' advertising are exclusive first party titles.

Yes there is. The Wii does have some Winning Eleven games over here. No idea if they made it out of Japan or not.

I have actually seen two capcom commercials on TV one for Dark Void and one for TVC.
