New A Cheap But Reliable Graphics Card for 1680X1050

Post by racketboy »

Got my Dell 20" Widescreen LCD, but to little surprise, but old Matrox graphics card doesn't support widescreen resolutions.
So...
What is a cheap (under $50) AGP 4X/8X, passively cooled graphics card that can support 1680X1050?

nVidia prefered over ATI...

edit: Actually, I can set Windows to 1600 x 1024, but text is a little funky looking and a little hard to read.
Haven't been able to tweak it to look right.

Any modern budget 7-series card should do any resolution you could possibly want, no matter how odd. You can probably even force your existing card to work in that resolution with a tweaking utility.

Dude, seriously. Just get a fan-cooled model. They aren't that noisy. I don't think they've made passively cooled nVidia's since the 6200s or so.

I was right, so that's basically your selection. tbh, that's really not going to last you very long, considering I don't think Vista w/Aero will run with that...But it will work for you. Just choose as per your max resolution, refresh rate, etc.

actually, this one is the best out of those three.

This is the best you can get w/o a fan.

This is the only 7 series I know of that's agp and fanless.

n'k so it looks like there are a few 7600 GSes that are fanless, but tbh, I doubt they are all that stable and you would need quite some circulation with your case's fans to make it work well.

Oh, and while mozgus is corret that there are tweaking tools, it may make the cpu run too hot, requiring you to get one of those fans you so dearly dislike.

None, but I know they're out there.

Also, you need a low-profile card right?

I thought you said in the other thread that your case with a slim-atx. A normal sized video card won't fit in that.

All mine are standard ATX cases...

Well it's only off by about 2000 pixels -- I wouldn't think that would stress the CPU out too much
