Free Photoshop alternatives?

Post by jfe2 »

Just wondering if anyone here may know of any decent and reliable Photoshop alternatives that can be had for free.

I like the GIMP. The only thing that has kept me from using it 100% of the time is the fact that it doesn't read my webcomic template files the same way that photoshop does. But for projects started from scratch the GIMP is just as good as Photoshop... and more cost effective.

As already noted, GIMP is a great free alternative to Photoshop. Getting a little off topic perhaps, but for vector graphics I've found Inkscape to be another great tool.

I've heard good things about GimPhoto, GimpShop (since I don't like Gimp's layout), Krita, Pixel, Paint.net and Fotografix. I still just use Paint Shop Pro. I've been using it since I got ver. 2 on a 5 1/2" floppy disk, and I love it.
I've had some specific graphic tasks that I used ImageMagick for. You can make very detailed scripts using if you're into that kind of script/programming stuff.

You can't touch up photos on this one, but can crop and rotate. Best feature is that you can convert tons of file types.
