Most reliable NES/SNES

Post by newt42 »

I'm looking into buying a NES and a SNES. Which models would be the most reliable in terms of not breaking down? Would I be better off with Famiclones, or were the mini redesigns superior?

DISCLAIMER: I know my sig says that I already have a SNES. It is a family owned SNES that resides at my dads house.
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.

clones of any kind are just shit. i would def go with the top loader nes. as for the snes its probably fair to say both models are built like tanks.
if you took a shit, please put it back

I would just go with the originals, clones are less reliable in just about every regard. I wouldn't bother with a toploader unless you can get a pretty good deal on one, because it's often cheaper and easier to just replace the 72-pin connector on a regular NES.

The redesigned NES is a top loader, so you can avoid all the annoyances of the front loading system. But you can easily replace the pins on the original NES. Also, the original NES has composite but the top loader doesn't. Though, you can mod the top loader to add composite.

The SNES mini doesn't output S-Video, but the original can. I think you can add S-Video to the mini, but I don't remember. Other than that, there isn't much difference. I don't think the mini can be region modified, if you care about that. Also, unless you want to add one, the mini doesn't have a power on light which can get kind of annoying.

I would stay away from the clone consoles, they don't have 100% compatibility and I've heard that sound and color can be a little off. Just stick with original Nintendo consoles.

So original or redesign models? I guess each have their pros and cons. Honestly, I would just go with the original models for a few reasons. For the NES: It's cheaper. A top loading system would be nice, but I don't mind the front loader and kinda like it too. I put a new pin connector in mine, and if it ever wears out, they're not hard to either replace again or just clean/repair them. Also, it has composite out. The mod to add composite to the top loader, from what I read, is a little hard to do. For the SNES: It's also cheaper. Other than that, there's not much of a difference if all you're doing is playing games. But I like having S-Video on mine.

The S-Video functions won me over. Definitely going with the originals. Thanks. :)

I would buy the original models and totally skip the clone systems. As it has been mentioned either version of SNES would be fine both are built well and for NES I like the front loading model since price is much cheaper on average and replacing 72-pin connector is very easy if needed. 8)

No, for a few reasons. It's already been mentioned that the top loader does NOT have composite. You're stuck with RF unless you mod. Also, on RF, the picture is not as good as it is with the original model. The blinking screen problem is easy to fix on the original.

Original NES>Top loading NES

It's already been mentioned that the SNES mini (I keep wanting to say Jr., as the model 2 SFC is called that) doesn't output an s-video signal, whereas the original does.

The SNES mini combined the two chips into one.
