Route 66 and glass bottles of coke

First of all, always buy mexican coke, it's made from real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. Can you really tell the difference? I'm not sure but I buy it anyway. Plus coke tastes better out of a glass bottle anyway.

Second, has anyone driven route 66, be it partially or all the way? I really want to drive from Chicago to LA on 66.

Wow, I seriously didn't even see that topic about throwback sodas before I made this, I just happened to be at the gas station a few minutes ago and bought a mexican coke. Anyway, the route 66 part of the post still stands.

Ive ALWAYS wanted to drive that route... and have been planning to do so when the opportune time comes up. I also wanted to drive it in my 1979 El Camino, but I may have to either pick a more fuel efficient/reliable car or put a shitton load of work in it before I rack up the miles.

Ive driven it a little but mostly just desert so not much to say. But as for Mexican Coke, that stuff is amazing. It has a smoother taste then the high fructose crap we have here. When I visit family in Mexico I drink that stuff nonstop. Also the grapefruit Jarritos. You mix that with some tequila and you got something special.

I would love to drive it in an old car but unfortunately it's not too realistic. That's a whole lot of miles to put on an unreliable/unsafe car from the 70s, no matter what level of restoration it's undergone. And based on my budget it's not happening at all. Although I might get a new Challenger at some point so that'd be good enough.

Simple answer? You can't. Well, at least, not like you used to. Much of what was old Route 66 is now part of the Interstate, depending on what state it is in. In California, this would be I-15, at least for part of it. You can still drive some of the original route, and those parts are generally advertised as "Historic Route 66", and it still has some of the same charm, though this can be relative to the driver. I used to drive some of it through the desert when I was a teenager, and have fond memories of it. The trick is to research which parts are still around, and are still worth driving. Interesting what is still out there. Actually, I find some of the more interesting sites are off 66. Careful driving through Barstow. That place can be a nightmare.

Mexican Coke is definitely better. And I can have it any time I want, because a grocery store a few miles from where I live imports it. Only in 12 ounce glass bottles, unfortunatly.

I have driven on Route 66 in the southwest. It's a pretty nice place to drive.

I basically live on Route 66 in SW Missouri. redmachus is right - you can't drive the whole thing like in the old days. There's a stretch that goes basically from where I live to Joplin that's still the old 2-lane road and it's fantastic to drive in the summer with the windows down. Not incredibly scenic, but still pretty cool.
