I just recently finished the game and really enjoyed its story. A few things bug me though and I wondered what others thoughts were on these. Three things really that bothered me
1. The Twin Valkyria duel
How is Alicia fighting when she's not even conscious? And why is Selvaria so easily defeated by her? I expected Selvaria to have the edge in this fight. The game never explains any of this.
2. Welkin's preachy nonsense
What's the deal with Welkin telling Max that he lost the moment he relied on the Valkyria's powers? As I recall, were it not for Valkyria Alicia, Gallia would have had its ass handed to it at the battle of Naggiar Plains. They also would have had no chance of defeating the Dreadnaught battleship. Ironic that he tells Alicia that true victory over Max and his dreadnaught should not come with the help of the Valkyria power and yet they have noooo problem exploiting the already existing damage on the thing that she inflicted in Valkyria form. Gallia would have lost the war were it not for the power of the Valkyria...which leads me to my third point
3. Faldio gets screwed
Seriously, Welkin gets all the glory while Faldio kills himself in shame and regret. Faldio, whose awakening of Alicia's powers SAVED EVERYONE'S ASS!!! He's clearly the smartest character in the whole game. What a shame
Otherwise, loved the games story, just had to nitpick a little. Thoughts?

I'm going to go with the "in a trance" thing with Alicia. This also lets her tap directly into her Valkyria powers without being hindered by concious thought. It's a pretty standard cliche, so I don't have too many problems with it.Gamerforlife wrote:1. The Twin Valkyria duel

So battle of Naggiar Plains, all Alicia did was remove the opposing invincible superweapon. Army vs. army it's clear that Welkin can run circles around the opposing forces. Thus, if Max relies on the Valkyria and said Valkyria is neutralized then Max has no leg to stand on. And to be fair, it's possible that the Dreadnaught could have been taken out without Alicia's shot to the bow, which did absolutely nothing with regards to its ability to drive into the capitol and steal the spear. Now, its been a while since I've played (a year or so), so I can't remember exactly what significance that hole in its armor had, so could you refresh my memory?2. Welkin's preachy nonsense

Yes, Faldio saved everyone's ass. But if we're looking from a strictly moral point of view, what he did was incredibly underhanded. He did not go to Alicia with the story "You're a Valkyria, and we can bring out your powers by trying to kill you." He instead snuck up on her and took her out. What if his theory was wrong? Had he explained what he wanted to do to her she was then free to willingly risk her life to try and save everyone (which she probably would have done anyway).3. Faldio gets screwed

If you like Faldio, check out the anime. They play fast and loose with some plot points, but Faldio ends up being the most badass character in the show.

Re: Post game thoughts on Valkyria Chronicles story(spoilers)
Here's the thing, even after Sylvaria was neutralized, Max STILL had the Gallian army on the ropes. It's only when Alicia went Valkyria AGAIN that they had any chance in hell of stopping the Dreadnaught. Looking at the course of events from an objective stand point, it's really Welkin and his squad that had to rely on the Valkyria to win the war, which makes his statement to Max somewhat hypocritical, but I guess it's easier to see that as a spectator to the story. I have the benefit of looking over the game's events without actually being wrapped up in them. Like a historian re-evaluating a real life historical event with the benefit of objectivity. Welkin seemed to really believe that the human spirit alone could save Gallia and they would have won with or without Alicia's power. I think he's a foolish idealist who got lucky...still like the guy thoughMrPopo wrote:I'm going to go with the "in a trance" thing with Alicia. What Faldio did was the only correct path in my eyes. There is no way in hell Welkin would ALLOW Alicia to mortally wound her self and I doubt she herself would have done it having no way of knowing if Faldio's theory was even correct. If anyone alive could get Alicia to harm herself it would be Welkin and he would never even consider it. Faldio made the hard choice that someone had to make. He's an integral part of Gallia's victory over the Empire, but he'll never be remembered as such because some people just don't believe that the ends justify the means and sometimes in life I think they do. And while I'm giving Faldio his props, I have to point out that Max was about to blow up the Dreadnaught killing Welkin, his squad and possibly even taking out the capital city as well. Who stopped him? That's right, it was Faldio, the REAL savior of Gallia. Faldio is like Welkin's shadow. He was just as important a part of Gallia's victory over the Empire as Welkin, but looked down upon and jailed for his metholds. I think a key point in the story is when Captain Varrot chooses not to pick a side when Welkin finally confronts Faldio and punches him. She knows Faldio's right, but can't say it because of ethics/morals coming into play
As for the damage Alicia did to the dreadnaught, within the actual battle it presented the ONLY way for your troops to get on its deck and take out the power behind its impenetrable shield. The way they designed that level it truly does not seem that they could have stopped the Dreadnaught had their own Valkyria not already damaged it. With all the power isn't everything preaching towards the end of the game(including Jaeger's speech after losing to Squad 7 on the bridge), the game seems to contradict itself when it's clear Valkyria power was just as essential to Gallia's successes as it was to the Empire
That's a lot of text, guess I really got into this game's story
