Just a question to collectors

Post by mas »

Hi everyone!!
I have a question to everybody who collects games and has a bunch of different systems.. Why do people collect games? I'm not bashing anyone by any means but I had just bought alot of different games for my systems and I realized that I have games that I'm never going to play or have the time to play and that I have now a snes, genesis, nes, wii and gamecube and I have about 50 or so games for each system espicially the gamecube. I love the gamecube but I'm buying games now just because their worth money. I bought tales of symphonia ikaruga zelda twilight hell I have zelda never opened nor do I planned to play the thing. I just love retro games like the genesis or snes pop in street fighter for ten minutes and then I'm done for the day. So my question is really why do we collect video games and does anyone have the same problem or is it me do anyone just buy a game and never plan to play it because it will be worth something or do any of you guys buy the games that either you had as a kid or never got the game as a kid and now you have the chance? I'm just curious because I'm going to start getting rid of some stuff because in the long run what are we going to do with this stuff in the future when were like 50 or so is anyone going to keep their stuff to they die?

well, i collect old games and systems because I grew up with them. I remember playing all the games as a child/adolescent/adult. I think im mostly hanging on to them so my son can play the games I enjoyed as a child and maybe it will help him appreciate what he has coming up nowadays. I look at them about the same way as my lego collection. Something from a bygone era to pass along so others that I love can enjoy a little piece of my life after im gone.

I got into it as a hobby that became a habbit, so...I kicked the habbit. I have had every console under the sun and now all I have are a few systems. I have a gamecube that I JUST got only for the fact of it being new for a gameboy player, I have the wii for new titles from nintendo, xbox 360 for online play, and a modded xbox to fill everything inbetween. For me...it was an addiction that needed to stop.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

Some I get are for nostalgia, however most are that I buy games I think I will want to play, in practice, I don't get around to playing many of them yet, but will do. I have something like 800 games, about 1/2 - 2/3 are retro console games the rest PC games. I also have many consoles too, and duplicates.

I try to only collect games I love. Subsequently, I almost never get rid of any games and systems. I plan on playing games my whole life. Although gaming is generally a cheap hobby when compared to collecting cars / houses, and sold games could always be recouped - I know I'd have that sinking feeling giving up something that brings me such joy.

I've had to fight off the urge to buy games just to have them multiple times. For whatever reason, I sometimes feel like I need to have a complete collection of good games for any system. Over time I've started to care less about playing every single little game, and more just settled into the habit of buying good games, beating them, and then buying more. I adamantly refuse to establish a backlog like I had a few years ago.

So really there's something of a distinction between collecting games and accumulating them.

I'm a man of variety and love to have a lot of choices. To be able to just pick out a game out of a vast collection and play it on demand is a great feeling. No waiting for it to download, no trip to the game store.

I grew up on it, its my hobby, I just got into collecting

I'm not trying to collect everything gaming related, I'm sure I'll go fine with out the atari or anything from that era I just don't have any connection to it, and just being a fan of retro gaming is awesome, i love it.

It's weird when I think about it, today I can play a game of MOD2 with against people from all over the states but it will never beat all the good times I had with my old friends in a small cramped room with no air conditioner in the summer time playing Marvel Vs Capcom for hours on in.
