VGA Box

Post by gennss »

As I stated a few months back, I have a new apartment, and its small. Like mega small. I can either sell my colection or find a vga box to hook up to my monitor to be able to play games. Currently vga monitor is hooked up to the 360 and dreamcast, which is how I've been getting my fix. But I do want to play my ps1, genesis and saturn.

I only use mine for my Gamecube, though if I remember correctly it actually has standard red/yellow/white inputs so you can actually hook up any console, DVD player, etc... I'll check mine out when I think of it.

Be warned that these kinds of VGA boxes (IE ones that just take composite signals and splurge them onto an LCD monitor) are gonna make things look like shit. So I'd use one as a last resort. It isn't going to look anywhere near as good as they would on a standard CRT TV. If you have a CRT monitor, and one that can support low resolution (as in 480i and below) then you will have better results.

You should really have searched the forum before creating a new thread though. There has been lots of threads regarding this topic with suggestions on what to buy on this forum.

What would be a nice High quality VGA box then Niode?
If one was to take Xbox (original Big black one) to VGA or maybe DVI with decent quality? I have tried a googe search, I just end up with reveiws of garbage VGA boxes (Mayflash, intec ETC)

This one outputs at 800x600 resolution, if someone could find a devent VGA box that outputs a resolution that isn't terrible (even 1024x768 would be fine), please PM me.

The XRGB would be what you are looking for.

also, keep in mind that one person's "looks like shit" is another person's "works for me." I mean, I don't really care about high def or whatever, and I got a VGA box to save room, so I'm pleased with my purchase.

Well if that's what works for you then fair enough. All I know is that when I tried this route at Uni it was close to being unplayable. Text is barely readable, reds bleed like crazy and strange inconsistent interlacing. Unless you're using something like the XRGB, and don't mind the input lag, then it really isn't worth trying. Of course you might have slightly better results with a low resolution CRT rather than an LCD.
