Knight 'n' Grail for Commodore 64
Knight 'n' Grail for Commodore 64
Holy crap... I just about had a heart attack when I learned about this game. I was actually over at our very own Flak Beard's blog when I first read about it.
It's like a Metroidvania style game that was developed for the Commodore 64. They offer a disc version, but seeing as I don't own a Commodore 64, I opted for the digital download, which was like $4. You can get the game at this link. http://www.binaryzone.org/retrostore/in ... cts_id=504
I may end up being in the market for a Commodore 64 if I end up falling in love with the game. Anyone ever play this? I haven't received my download link yet, seeing as I just ordered it, but I am VERY excited to try it out.

Got my download code in today and gave it a shot with the CCS64 emulator. For some reason Vice wouldn't load it up. Here are a few of my impressions so far.
It's definitely a Metroidvania style game. Right off the bat you can see a few items and doors that you can't access, but you just know that later on you'll be able to take your powered up character back to collect all the awesomeness. The character moves at a slow place, but it really compliments the gameplay. It feels like an old school arcade game. It all really clicks.
I'll put some more time into and post some more thoughts later on. Other people should try this! It's like $4 for the digital version, and not much more for the actual disc version.
*Edit. I took a couple of pics with CCS64, and tried to take some video, but apparently there is a codec problem or something. Other people on the CCS64 forum are having the same issue, so I guess I'll have to wait til they fix it.

This game is great so far! I've acquired the double jump, so its time to own some fools.

My friend showed me that a while back. It's incredibly impressive! It looked like a lot of fun too. We were talking about how that single game would've changed the entire world had it come out when the C64 was in it's prime. Definitely worth a play through.

I'll have to try to get the CCS64 emulator working. I had some trouble the last time so I didn't get far before I moved on. I was trying to get Dark Castle to work. I'll try again and check out this game. Thanks for the tip.

Man, don't bother with Dark Castle. Its a terrible game with terrible controls. If you played it back in the day and are looking back with rose colored glasses, do yourself a favor and don't ruin it.gtmtnbiker wrote:I'll have to try to get the CCS64 emulator working. KnG however does look awesome. I just might have to pick up the disk version.

Heh heh. I had played it on the Mac. Is your criticism directly only at the C64 version? My other option is to try working on a hackintosh again and running it via some compatibility emulator.Hobie-wan wrote:Man, don't bother with Dark Castle. Its a terrible game with terrible controls. I played it once on a Mac a long time ago. At the time it looked really cool but I sucked badly during the 20 minutes I got to play it. Lots of frustrating jumps and goddamn bats. Then I got a C64 copy and found out that it wasn't just that I sucked for lack of practice, but the game control was terrible. There are Genesis and CDi versions too if you're really desperate. That would be an easier way to ruin your nostalgia.gtmtnbiker wrote:Heh heh. I had played it on the Mac. Is your criticism directly only at the C64 version? It definitely would have made a HUGE impact. This would be considered an absolute classic had it been made back then. Hell, in my book it IS an absolute classic! This game must be played! Play to the first boss and I guarantee that you will be hooked.Anapan wrote:My friend showed me that a while back. It's incredibly impressive! It looked like a lot of fun too. I'm playing Knight 'n' Grail on CCS64, but I hear that Vice is good as well. I haven't had any success with it, but it may be worth trying.gtmtnbiker wrote:I'll have to try to get the CCS64 emulator working. Well, I beat it. Awesome, awesome game that any Metroidvania fan, or retro gaming fan in general, should at least try.
