Some quick Neo Geo Pocket questions

Post by alienjesus »

I'm planning on importing a neo geo pocket color from japan, and i just wanted to check a few things:

1.Am i correct in assuming its region free?
2. If it is, my US/EU games will still play in English right?
3. Is there an adapter available for the NGPC? if so, I imagine i'll need the japanese version with a step down converter and wont be able to use a UK adapter?

4. .....The Batteries aren't any different in japan are they? I know its a stupid sounding question, and i'm pretty sure they aren't, but i find it pays to check these things.

1. Yes, it is region free
2. Yes, the language would remain unchanged
3. There are AC adapters available for the NGPC, but I am not sure if every version of the NGPC has the same output jack.
4. Every NGPC should use AA batteries, but there is a secondary watch battery (for game saves), which might be different.

4. They're the same batteries.

2. Yes, the NGPC has a language setting which most carts will follow. Faselei! does not have both languages on a given cart, though it might be the only one like that.
3. There is an AC adapter for the NGPC, I'm not sure if you'd need to use a japanese AC adapter with a japanese NGPC, I would assume that as long as the adapter has the right tip and output it should work. I could be wrong though.

I have to ask though, why do you want to import one? The NGPC was released in europe, and isn't all that uncommon either, at least as far as I know. Good choice for a handheld though, the NGPC has one of the strongest libraries out there, even if it is a little small.

Terrible assumption. This assumption is a major reason why people importing electronics destroy them.

Well, he did say tip and output, so in the broad sense all bases are covered. As long as the power brick tip is the same shape and has the same polarity it is fine. The voltage needs to be the same (or say not more than a ½ volt lower), but the mA can be the same or larger on the power brick versus what the system needs. I wouldn't go a lot higher, but the unit will only draw what it needs. Remember that 1000 mA = 1 A

Yeah, I guess that is correct. I just get very worried when I see a post like that as burning out electronics is not fun...

I've never done it myself, but I had a TV delivered to my home once and the delivery men plugged it into a power bar in my living room without asking me where I'd like it plugged in. It was a 100V HD-CRT and the power bar was plugged into a 100V-220V step-up transformer for my 220V stuff. That little mistake left me TV-less for a couple weeks and cost the delivery company about $300 (at least) in repair bills.

Yeah I was just trying to break it down simply. I've had my fair share of electronic mishaps from my less careful, more youthful days (try hooking up a mains plug to the battery terminals of a TI-82. Boredom kills electronics! ), so I definitely know to be careful with such things. I just didn't want to scare him off with amperage and voltage and whatnot, mostly because I don't have a complete understanding of it myself, I just know enough to not kill my toys  .

Dude holy crap! I remember seeing the original etherkiller, I desperately wanted to make one, seeing as it was very simple and immature, but I had enough foresight to realize if I were to make it, it would only end in a horrible firey death, so I decided against it.

I can't believe how many iterations of it there are now. Goddamn, makes me wish I had some spare electronics to destroy!
