Composite via TDA chip for Colecovision - help?

Post by bacteria »

I have an old ColecoVision in PAL format and having trouble making it work on video - composite or S-Video.

The chip outputs Y, B-Y and R-Y

Y is Luma
If I join B-Y and R-Y does that give Chroma for S-video? If it is I can use S-video fine....

Getting stuck!

The PAL version of the ColecoVision is different to the NTSC one regards the RF board - no processor, etc. The R-Y, Y, B-Y are off the graphics chip.

Ideas?

I know Ben Heck has a guide, it is NTSC but you could still take some info from it.

No, that's the point, that info is of no use as the components making up the RF are different, no chip in the PAL for a start.

I think I remember reading somewhere that if you cross the signal lines you should be able to pull S-video, however I can't source it, your best bet would be to try, not sure how easy/Hard the Coleco's are to fry anyways.

Looks like the system might be set for component video; from what I have read, R-Y is the red component plug, Y is the green one and B-Y is the blue one.

I'm going to test to see if the system will work on my new television in my bedroom, that takes component amoungst other inputs. Assuming it does, I can at least play the ColecoVision for a while before working out how to convert this into a different video method. Hopefully the signal from the 26 year old ColecoVision is strong enough...

Why would you add Compocrap?
might as well use component, looks tons better and the Ps1 screen supports it anyways...

No, the PSone screens support composite and RGB. PAL PSone screens can take S-video and RGB as an alternative (easy mod). PSone screens cannot do component, you are confusing it with composite!!

I need some help please.

The chip suggested: TDA8501 - datasheet is HERE (click on "locate datasheet") for the PDF file

I don't mind if I get composite, RGB or S-video output; I do want it in PAL though (is that pin 17 > ground?). What I need to know please is do I just connect the R-Y, B-Y, Y lines from the Coleco graphics chip to a 47uf capacitor (each line) to the pins on the TA8501 and then tap S-video off the luma and chroma lines off that chip, and job done; or do I need to do other things too please/need other components (if so, how connected?).

I am tearing my hair out at this! I get audio fine, just can't get video!

Is this right for wiring it for PAL composite?

1 R-Y input
3 B-Y input
5 Y input
8 5v in
10 ground
14 chroma out
17 ground
19 luma out

maybe pin 2 to ground?

What resistors and/or capacitors will I need to use and where?

S-Video is Y (Luma) and C (Chroma). From what you've said in that last post (and from the datasheet), pin 14 and pin 19 should give you PAL S-Video.

Generally I put a 75ohm resistor and 220uF cap on the lines to start with, and work from there. Here's a similar mod I did on a PAL Sega Master System:

http://www.stickfreaks.com/smsmod.php

I found that on certain colours, I'd drop sync. Apparently the solution is a small amp, documented here:
http://www-unix.ecs.umass.edu/~dhowland ... ildingamps

If you do want to go with component, it should be much the same affair. The Pr and Pb signals in component YPrPb are merely the Chroma (the "C" in S-Video's "Y/C") split in two to reduce crosstalk noise and keep image quality up. As above, try the 75ohm/220uF combo, and if that fails use the small amp circuit on all lines.

Hrm... might be worth your time to study this:

The GamesX guides are always of a high quality, and perhaps it's best to follow that instead of my advice.
