I was doing holiday shopping tonight and while I was at Toys-R-Us, I saw that they had some Karaoke machines for sale. I thought it might be neat to get one since my girls are always singing/humming in the house. Fortunately I didn't buy one because when I got home, I read the reviews which panned the Toys-R-Us units.
So are there any Karaoke fans here? What are your recommendations on a karaoke machine? Any good forums/websites to read? I'll start googling but I'm interested in hearing recommendations.

my suggestion if you have a ps2 get singstar games or with a 360 get lips. You can upload songs from you ipod to lips. No words but the song will still come through the tv and they can sing along. With the karaoke machines you need to get specific cds in order for the words to come up anyway so my feeling is games are the way to go.

I actually know for a fact that the Sega Saturn can be used as a karaoke device, in that it can play CD+G discs, but you can't use microphones with it in it's basic state.
I think they have karaoke add-ons, but you can probably find a way to hook up microphones to whatever outputs the sound.
Like, if I hook it up to a TV via RCA inputs, I could just make (or buy) adapter that splits the signal so you can plug in both the sound cables and up to 2 microphones.
And there's software where you can make your own CD+G discs, so you get the music AND lyrics. But you have to have a lot of patience, since you have to manually add (type or paste) the lyrics and tell it when each line starts.
I've wanted to make a few ones, including one with tracks from musicals like RENT, Rocky Horror, Wicked, Forbidden Zone, and so on. And some The Cramps karaoke discs.

I don't do much actual karaoke but I do love to sing Japanese songs, often in the car. Sometimes I will lower the windows and get weird looks from people when they hear me singing Japanese songs. Is there a good Japanese karaoke game available? I haven't really looked into it. I think my Wondermega has karaoke support but I dunno how I would go about using it.

They would likely be CD+G discs since the Sega CD supports CD+G. See the button on the bottom right of its interface, I'm assuming the Wondermega has something similiar.Inazuma wrote:I think my Wondermega has karaoke support but I dunno how I would go about using it.

The only one I have is Information Society, which has a bunch of silly graphics and shows lyrics.

I suggest getting an old pc and the Karafun program:
http://www.karafun.com/
Its free for home use, or atleast use to be, and has free word tracks for many popular songs. I bought a copy to use at conventions in the past, after about a week of looking, it was the easiest to use and the best deal.
I have a standalone Karaoke machine that I won at an old job in a raffle. It has been my bathroom radio for five years now.

I feel stupid for not mentioning this earlier. Ultrastar is the only thing you need go get a torrent of this. It is basically sing star for the computer. The torrent I donwload can with over 2000 songs lyrics, music video and mp3
