Weird-ass RPGs?

Post by BAD PIXEL »

After reading the recent RacketBoy posting on rare GameBoy games, and seeing Survival Kids (a "kids surviving on an island" RPG) for the first time, I started searching around for other, lesser known RPGs for the GB, GBC and GBA. I stumbled across a great deal for Legend of the River King - essentially an RPG about fishing - and it got me thinking... How many other weird-ass, non-traditional RPGs are out there? Harvest Moon ("farming" RPG) and Earthbound/Mother ("pesky kids" RPG) come to mind, but what about other great, off-the-mainstream RPGs? Any suggestions or favorites?
YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE DEAD. GAME OVER.

Seventh Cross Evolution for Dreamcast is pretty damned strange.

There's ChoroQ, which is a (ahem) "CarPG". Yeah. I haven't played it.

I like it when RPGs have a certain unique mechanic. The map building aspect of the Etrian Odyssey games was really awesome. It made the whole dungeon crawling thing more fun.

Knights in the Nightmare has a million crazy mechanics, none of which make any sense to me because I haven't played it yet. It seems really cool though.

I'm pretty sure there is a pinball rpg out there but I forget what it's called.

Not portable, but these 2 immediately came to mind:

Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden - about basketball

Yume Nikki - No stat gaining, but it's certainly the most weird-ass RPG I know of.

Armada for the DC. I believe it's featured in one of the articles on this site.

the pinball game is for the NES and called pinball quest. It's not really an RPG, it's more of a multistage pinball game where you can buy power ups for the pinball section.

there is a strange RPG for the GBC called Great Greed. I'm not sure how obscure you might consider it but let's just say its theme is "food"

Final Lap Twin for the TG-16 was a racing game with rpg battles. Quite a unique and fun little game.

Shadow Hearts From The New World for PS2 is pretty weird. In one part of the story, you rescue Al Capone with a Indian, Fat Cat, a American Ninja named Frank with a cactus sword and a girl that must strip down to her under things to reveal her true power. Strange indeed but a great game none the less. Also Unlimited Saga is really weird but a cool game if you can forgive its major flaws.
