N 64 Power Supply problems

Post by Kyle »

so today I got my N 64, but I've got a problem. Either I can't turn on the console or the N64 shuts down after 2 minutes.
So my question, is the power supply or the N 64 itself broken?

I'd think it more likely has to do with the power switch than the power supply.

It's probably the power supply but I'm not sure. I would find a known working power supply and try it out. Then try your power supply with a known working N64. You'll figure out which component is the issue.

A friend of mine has a working power supply, I will ask him.
If it's not the power supply, but the n 64 itself what should I do? Just buy a new one or is there a known problem or something like that?

If it has the expansion pack chances are it's overheating. So just make sure to have plenty of space around your n64.

Mine kept restarting when i had it on top of my vcr.

An expansion pack can run happily without any shielding to keep it cool. If it runs for a short time and then goes off, and you turn on again and it doesn't work it probably means either the power supply or if not, could be overheating, although probably isn't as the N64 doesn't generate a mass of heat and has lots of metal shielding to dissipate the heat, although yes, if it is on top of something hot, it might cause an issue as the general heat would increase; if the two main chips get hot it will shut off the system. The other thing it could be is a dirty cart slot, if the pins have tarnished, might make contact sometimes othertimes not; if the N64 doesn't recognised an official cart present it won't boot.

Unplug the power supply, let it sit for 20mins. to 48 hours and try it again.

Nintendo puts a breaker inside all of it's power supplies since the N64 which can cause the power to fluctuate erratically or simply not operate at all unless unplugged and let sit to properly reset the breaker.
