So I've played almost every Final Fantasy, but I'm just wondering what you guys think are the definitive versions of Final Fantasy's 1-6.
7-12 are fine, but there's so many versions of 1-6 that I'm having trouble choosing.
And let's just list the oversea versions. I know the best versions of IV or V must be the JP versions, but you know, some of us have trouble playing those.

I'm extremely (nay, EXTREMELY) partial to the GBA versions of I, II, IV, V, and VI.

As well as the GBA versions of everything.noiseredux wrote:I'm extremely (nay, EXTREMELY) partial to the GBA versions of I, II, IV, V, and VI.
Personally, I prefer 1,4, and 6 on their original consoles. For the later titles you have a couple more options. If you're into translation patches and whatnot, you can simply emulate the games, or better put them on a flash cart. As far as playing these on other consoles, my main advice would just be to stay away from the PS1 versions, as they're severely gimped with loading times.
EDIT: A couple more suggestions.
If you plan on playing 2, make sure that it's one of the later versions, like GBA or the PS1 version (the one with both 1 and 2, because that was the only version that didn't have the trouble with the previously mentioned load times). Frankly, the famicom version was horrible.
As far as specific versions of the games go, if you don't have 8bit Nostalgia like me, I'd probably go with the PS1 remake of 1 & 2. The graphics were better, there were added dungeons and whatnot, plus it didn't have the gimped difficulty that the GBA one did (unless you play the ship game, which is at least avoidable).
Probably your best (and frankly your only) bet for FFIII is going to be the DS version, because it's the only one we got here in the states. Your other option is of course emulation.
Final Fantasy V you should go with the GBA version, but again that's just about your only option.

I have to admit that while I love FF1 on NES it was so nice being able to save anywhere on the PSP remake. One hard ass dungeon in particular comes to mind. For nostalgia it is hard to beat the NES version though.

Alright, so it turns out that I played the gimped versions of 4 and 5. 5 also had that horrible translation for Faris. I don't know what it is, but the translation to make her seem more like a pirate put me off from her.

How was the difficulty on that version? Was it like Dawn of Souls on the GBA (read: way easier than the original)?jp1 wrote:I have to admit that while I love FF1 on NES it was so nice being able to save anywhere on the PSP remake. No shame in that. But frankly, Faris is a character that I didn't like regardless.Veno wrote:Alright, so it turns out that I played the gimped versions of 4 and 5. 5 also had that horrible translation for Faris. Really? I thought that I could come to like her.
Well, anyway, so FF4 was considered incomplete as FF2 on SNES, since things were changed and missing. PS1 gave them back, but was marred by loading times. So I'm guessing the definitive is the GBA? Good thing I'm playing it now.
For FF5, PS1 was a mess, and currently, I'm liking the GBA port, but I was really curious if translating the SNES version would be better, because it has better music.
I've only tried FF6 on GBA, but I think the SNES might be better, because of a bigger scaled screen and better music.
Sound good?
Edit- How could I forget again? I've never been able to beat FF1 on the NES, or never had the patience. I'm not sure which version I should go with.
