Win XP SP2 , want to update to SP4 how ? cough cough

hi scene , i was given a copy of Win XP SP2 ages ago from someone and have been using it on one of my PC's. All has been fine but i want to update it to SP4 how do i do this ? , i must add its not a legal version of XP its on a CD-R and has a Serial No. on the CD-R. Im not sure if a update will do something nasty to my PC , i use it to run MAME and other emulators on my Arcade Machine. If i can update to SP4 i will be able to get higher FPS thats what im aiming for.

Uh, there is no Service Pack 4 for XP. SP3, plus regular updates.

SP updates are usually more security and bug related. I doubt there's much that will be a huge impact on an emulator running better besides driver updates for the video and sound card.

Also I would think asking the question you're asking isn't really allowed since you're asking about a product that is still sold.

If your copy of XP that is running on your pc is a legally owned copy that's not being used simultainiously on a nother computer, you should be able to update without any problems. XP SP4 doesn't exist. Also, SP3 isn't really going to boost system performance, it's there more to bundle every update from SP3 that patched security, compatibility, and other things under the hood.

I don't know why people ignore or block automatic updates from Windows, but that's something you should leave on to keep your system up to date with security patches and minor tweaks to improve performance. Just click your Windows Update icon under Start-Programs, and you'll be greeted with a ton of things you have missed. It's gonna take a while, you may want to break out a book or something while it reboots a couple of times.

Your best bet for performance boosts, would be to upgrade memory, harddiscs (RPM speeds over 7200), or CPU if possible. If you're running XP, I'd assume your system is already a few years old. There won't be much you can do as Microsoft is pretty much done with XP now as are most software companies.

However if you are running Windows 2000 updating to sp4 will be a BIG boost to performance. Not saying that you are, I think you might have read about 2000 and confused it with XP.

Stay with SP2 and keep the updates, SP3 etc are just all the service updates more up to date, but you'll get them anyway as you are.
