dvd burning

Hello,

I don't burn dvds, I haven't done it in years.
Lately I got a video off the net , and using a mac, it takes a good 1 hour and a half to re-encode and burn.

1 video that was 2+ hours took six hours!

Is this how dvds are supposed to be burned? Am I doing something wrong?
in my 2002 iMac it took that long, I thought in 2009 macbook it will take few minutes?

Video encoding is VERY processor heavy. The faster your CPU, the faster the job will get done. Also depends on the software, I guess.

When you are burning a DVD from a non-mpeg2 source, such as MKV or AVI the system needs to re-encode the file into the DVD compatible mpeg2 format. All DVDs are encoded in mpeg2 format and dvd players are essentially an optical drive, an mpeg decoder and a digital to analogue a/v converter for output to TV.

If you are doing a lot of avi films to disc I would suggest getting a divx/avi compatible dvd player and just burning the files straight to a DVD. Rather than take my DVD collection to Uni with me, I ripped my films with handbrake into 700mb avi files and then burnt several films to 1 DVD and watched them on my divx player. Much more efficient way of doing it.

And most newer dvd players feature usb ports for loading media off a usb stick or usb hard drive. But if you want to read other media format you need to think about media players, which have become more accessible now and feature network connectivity. Reencoding movies is boring.

Well, what do you know
My player is new and it plays Divx(thanx extra $10 or so)
so i just drag and drop them in the DVD like regular files?

I gave up on this a while ago and just use my TV as a second monitor. when I want to watch a movie I switch the TV to the comp input and drag VLC over there and go full screen with it.

I got a 1 TB external HD just to keep media on it. when it's full I'll just get another. I don't think DVD's will last any longer than HD's it's a gamble either way. I've had burned and factory made DVD's go bad. so far I haven't had a HD go bad.

first I thought the only way to play iso's was burning them, but then I found VLC will play those folders fine so that's really when I stopped bothering with it.
I just need a wireless keyboard and mouse so I can work my comp from the couch.

Nate, I have a laptop so yeah it wouldn't bother me to hook it up to the TV, but I do not have that much media any way(I don't see much reason to store movies+shows once you have seen them), but I think some computers now work with a remote control with a media system like XMBC.

Most remotes out there were made for windows xp media center edition but also work on xp.

Cool you worked things out, a dvd player without divx now its like a music player without mp3 playback.
