need help to decide which system i should put my money into

Post by mas »

fellow gamers,
As of right now im in a little delima. I currently own 4 systems actually 5 if you want to make the gamecube a system. What i mean by that is I have the wii, gamecube, (i play the gamecube games on my wii but i bought a balck gamecube and gba player at a flea market with 2 controllers 6ft extention cords and three games for ten dollars just for backup) a front loader nes, a small snes and a gbasp. I love fighting games like street fighter and mortal kombat etc. and action games/run and shoot thats why i love my old school nes and snes. I grew up with that generation i but now as time goes on im finding it harder and harder to spend my money on those classics. I have a little of what I want for the snes/ nes collection like street fighter and the marios and punch- outs but I just got punchout for the wii and its freakin awesome. My kids play the old school stuff but its getting to be rather expensive lately. My problem is that the games left that i want like tmnt4 or super castlevania 4 or metriod or kid icarus is all abouve the ten to fifteen dollar mark. That kind of money can get me some really good gamecube games or wii games at gamestop. Im just asking is it worth to continue to buy nes games and snes games or just buy gamecube and wii games especially when you can actually download the classics on your wii and if thats the case should I just get rid of the snes and nes systems since i can download everything these days? Please give me some feedback on this topic. I know your probally already hearing and seeing this topic all the time but when you have kids and family and bills its hard to keep up with the buying of video games.
THANK YOU

Buy in lots and resell/trade the stuff you don't want. Keep an eye on craigslist. I bought an SNES bundle a while ago that had TMNT4 and half a dozen other games for $20. Part of the fun is in the hunt.

OTOH, gamecube games are about as low as they're going to get. So what I'd do is buy gamecube games when you can, and maybe keep a little aside for when you see a deal. You never know when you're going to find someone selling a pile of cheap games that just happens to have Secret of Mana or Duck Tales 2 in it.

Go with the retro classics on the systems they were meant to be played on, not the wii. Don't go with the overly expensive titles though, cause they just aren't worth it, like I personally don't find the Castelvania games for the NES all that great. Get Contra if you dont already have it

I'll concur with the GameCube suggestion, as those games are relatively cheap right now. I think too that as time goes on the GameCube titles will get scarcer because of the backwards compatibility. It would be a fairly small collection too, so you would have that going for you. To get you started this is what my collection consists of;

1080 4.99
Animal Crossing 16.99
Beyond Good and Evil 14.99
Chi-Chi Robo 12.00
Cubivore 20.00
Eternal Darkness 17.99
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance 24.00
F-Zero 5.40
Ikaruga 40.00
Legend of Zelda: Coll Edition 29.99
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 24.00
Legend of Zelda: The 4 Swords Adv 24.95
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 7.50
Legend of Zelda: Windwaker 15.39
Luigi's Mansion 13.60
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour 12.00
Mario Power Tennis 7.50
Mario Superstar Baseball 7.50
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes 28.00
Paper Mario 18.00
Pikmin 20.00
Pikmin 2 7.50
Resident Evil 0 10.40
Skies of Arcadia 15.00
Sonic Gems 13.00
Sonic Mega Collection 7.00
Soul Calibur II 3.50
Star Fox: Adventures 4.99
Star Fox: Assault 19.99
Super Mario Strikers 24.00
Super Mario Sunshine 7.50
Super Smash Bros. 18.00
Tales of Symphonia 13.00
Viewtiful Joe 2.70
Viewtiful Joe 2 2.70
Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble 6.30
Warioworld 5.00
Wave Race 4.49

The first column is what they go for retail (but that was probably about a year ago, so prices may be considerably cheaper). Also take into account that GameCube titles are still available at GameStop, so take advantage of the buy 2 get 1 deal and the Edge card.

personally id keep the older systems as i find its a much better experience when you manage to track down a game and then play it rather than just downloading it. ive got a pretty modest collection of about 100 nes games and usually spend around $2 for each at garage sales or second hand shops. even got a few famicom games and a multicart with a converter inside.

That being said, if you need the space, emulation on your wii or other newer systems might be the way to go. If you pick up a flashcart for your GBA (ive got a Supercard SD) you can place NES, mastersystem and lots of other games on it..not sure how they would work on your gameboy player, but on the handheld its great. ive got a DS myself (with an Edge) so its a bit better for emulation, but GBA still has lots of emulators in development.

but like i said earlier, the experience for me just isnt the same when its not the original system
Atari 2600 Jr., NES, Gameboy, Genesis 1 and 2, Saturn, Virtual Boy, Gameboy Advance (with Supercard SD), Playstation (With Goldfinger), Nintendo 64, Playstation 2(modded), Nintendo DS (Fat) with Edge

As a collector I can't recommend that you sell your old consoles, besides you probably have some sentimental attachment to them. Your last sentence says it all, if you want to save some cash use emulation on your pc or get your with softmoded so you can use emulation or get the virtual console games via the other not so popular way.

I prefer to buy the original physical copy than buying anything on virtual console. There are others factors involved like having space to hookup all the consoles and controllers versus having only one console with all of the games you want to play. I probably have played a lot of games for which I have a physical copy but actually emulate them on a portable console.
Consoles: NES, Famicom, SNES, GC, GB DMG, GB Pocket, GBC, GBA, DSI XL, N64, VBoy, NDS, 3DSXL, Wii, SMS, GEN+CD+32X, GG, SAT, DC, WS, WS Color, NGPC, XBOX, 360, PS1, PSone, PS2, PSP, PS3, 3DO, CD-I, NGCD, Actionmax, TG16+CD, TE, PCE-DUO, Odyssey2, Playdia, 2600, Lynx & JAG.

Metroid and Kid Icarus can both be had for under $15. I say keep the systems. Imo, they're a lot more fun than either the GC or the Wii.

You guys do realize that this thread is from '09?
I'm not trying to be "that guy" and I'm not against bumping old threads but I'm not sure this topic in particular needed a necro-bump... unless mas gets something out of this added feedback, of course.
