Playing Dreamcast on a Sonykv-36-fs100??

Post by REZinated »

Greetings all. Please excuse me if this post is in the wrong place.

I would really like to get my Dream Cast outputting 480 to my sony crt television. It supports 480i (only) through component cables and it doesn't have a vga input.

The model is Sony kv-36fs100 if anyone knows about it.

I'm just a little confused about a couple of things. If i get one of those Dreamcast VGA boxes can I simply use a VGA to component cable adapter to hook it up to the TV? I don't need to convert the signal do I? I'd rather not use S-video although i hear it looks much better that the standard composite video cables. I guess what I really need to know is that If I am already getting a 480p signal from a VGA source can't I just use a VGA to component cable and plug it into the 480i supporting television? It just seems to easy. Any information is greatly apprectaied.

Just get a component cable. No sense messing with converters.

Dreamcast unfortunately does not support component cables only Composite, S-Video, RGB Scart and VGA with VGA adapter. . I have a direct VGA box hooked up to my Dreamcast and a LCD computer monitor. The VGA box grounds out a couple contacts internally telling the Dreamcast to switch to 640 x 480 mode. About half of the Dreamcast games support the VGA setup. A plain VGA to component cable only results in a momentary over saturated purple off center screen. You can get a VGA to Component transcoder that might work but they are expensive. Looks like your TV doesnt have a direct VGA input so best solution for your setup is use a S-Video connection; that alone is a good improvement over the single yellow composite cable.

Here's a link for specs on your TV:

The most you can ever expect out of it is 480i with S-Video. VGA Box won't work on this TV.

The good news since it is a non-HD CRT TV is that the Dreamcast lightgun will work great!

I have one of the few HD 4:3 not widescreen CRT TV that was sold before the change to LCD widescreen TV's. At 120hz its a great pic for retro games, though my lightgun doesnt work since i have no direct VGA input.

It is model number KV-32HS500.

Still debating of going VGA to Component transcoder or a VGA to HDMI converter box. Knowing in VGA mode the resolution does kick up to 640x480 the screen would defintely look better. However unsure if Dreamcast lightgun with House of Dead would work. I suspect if I get a full screen (TV does offer Interlace mode) with VGA 640x480 than lightgun would work.

Has anyone try either convertor with Dreamcast VGA?
