So Ninty gave me a NES game

Post by Curlypaul »

Which one should I get?

I'm almost embarrased to say I've never played on a NES - Sega ruled supreme over here, so which one should I get?

I like shooters and I've recently got into 2D platformers although I'm not very good at them hence I havnt listed any of the rock solid ones like Castlevania or MegaMan

I said SMB3 because it's must have. So is Punch-Out. I would've voted Galaga, but I've never played the NES port, so can't vouch for it's conversion quality. But Galaga is one of the best games ever.

Actually, if platformers are an issue, that would rule out Super Mario Bros. 3.

Punch-Out!! is my favorite NES game, but that doesn't mean I think it's the best NES game. I'd say something along the lines of SMB3, Super Metroid, or if you're really itching for a shooter, perhaps Crisis Force or Gun-Nac.

I thought the same thing. But I think he's not against platformers in total. Just the more challenging ones. (Castlevania & MM1 are certainly challenging!)

Yeah thats right, I'm quiet interested in platformers but I dont want to play something thats totally soul destroying. I always hated platformers as I'm fairly uncoordinated but I recently played thru NSMB and enjoyed it so I've been looking at other (easier) platformers.

I do see the appeal of harder games though, especially ones that frequently force you to restart as by the time you've beat the level you've got total mastery of all the obstacles which is a very cool feeling.

Castlevania really didn't become all that similar to Metroid until Symphony of the Night. I highly recommend Super Metroid. I've never considered the Metroid games to be particularly challenging. Super Mario Bros. 3 is also often regarded as the best of the Mario games, so with either option you couldn't go wrong. But really, get both. And Punch-Out!!. And Crisis Force.

I only just caught on to the fact we're talking about VC here. Ok, scratch Crisis Force.

Do they have...

River City Ransom?
Metal Storm?
A Boy and His Blob?

If so I think those are all better choices than what you put in the poll. The difficulty may be a little higher than you would like with Metal Storm but the game is so awesome you won't care. Kirby is a fun game though and doesn't really get the love it deserves.
