Genesis Mixing Cable Confusion

Post by Barry the Nomad »

So I've finally gotten my hands on my old Genesis Model 1 and Sega CD Model 2. They hook together, work perfectly (I've tested with the RF box) and I'm now attempting this setup:

I have yet to buy the 8-pin a/v cable, but those are common and won't be a problem. The basic Left/Right RCA is all set from the Sega CD to the TV.
Now to the mixing cable. What exactly is this cable? I don't believe I have it, and according to ebay sellers it is "hard to find" and "rare". Is this ebay bullshit, or actual fact? To me, the "mixing cable" looks like a standard stereo mini male to stereo mini male cable. Could I simply head to Radio Shack and use one of these:

I'm sure the official Sega mixing cable is rare, but as mentioned it's no different from a standard stereo cable.

Yes, any male to male headphone jack adapter will work. But don't go to Radio Shack, they suck. Just get one from Monoprice. You'll have to wait for shipping, but it's cheaper and you're not patronizing evil.

Thank you all for the info!
Odd that it's never called a stereo headphone cable in any of the manuals.

I'll probably pilfer the computer closet at work for a stereo cable, so Radio Shack won't be getting any of my money.

What makes me VERY happy is, after reading through Sega-16, I've found that I have one of the model 1's with superior sound! Can't wait to finally hear stereo Genesis sound (outside of the Nomad, of course).

Try to find a cable with a right angle plug so it won't stick out as bad from the front of the machine.

Also use a shielded cable as the Model 1 Genesis tends to output a slightly dirty signal that is subject to even the slightest interference.

Thanks for the tips guys! I've got the cables all set and am rocking out to stereo Genesis/Sega CD/32X sound. I especially love the rings in Sonic alternating channels when collected, something I used to only hear on Sonic Jam and the Nomad.

I have a model 1 Genesis on a model 2 Sega CD without the tray extender, so the mixing cable neatly twists under the lip of the systems.

Oh yeah, the first time I heard the alternating "Pling! Pling's!" In Sonic was when I first got a Model 1 and hearing that with headphones on just freaking blew my mind as the coolest little use of a sound effect I'd ever heard.

EDIT!: Oh and how are you enjoying the 32X's amazingly sharp, colorful and rainbow artifact free composite?
