Modded PSX and memory card problems

Post by jfe2 »

I've been trying to get my translation patched burned copy of Policenauts working with my modded Playstation. I can usually get around five or ten minutes in before it freezes up on me. At first I thought it had to be the way I was burning the discs, but now that I've tried the disc with an emulator, I know that's not the case. Could the disc drive be going bad on the Playstation? I'm not sure what else would cause the freezing, but I know some of you guys are freaking geniuses when it comes to this stuff. :D

I have another Playstation that has never been used since I opened it out of the box, so I could always switch the mod chip if that's whats going on.

Also, I just bought a Memory Card from eBay and whenever I plug it in, my controller won't work. It is an official card and is the clear blue style. I've tested it out, and if I plug it into either card slot on the Playstation, my controller won't be recognized any more. I know it's still connected because the red analog light still lights up. I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about that as well.

This stuff has been driving me crazy! Please help!

The PS drive isn't as good at reading burned discs as your PC drive with an actual burner is. There may be errors on the disc that your PC is able to correct. Dir you burn the disc at a slow speed, say 4x? Older consoles will have trouble reading discs burned at modern 40+ speeds.

You know, now that I think about it, I did burn both discs at different speeds. Alcohol 120% has been acting strange. Originally it wouldn't let me change from TAO to DAO/SAO, and when I burned the first disc it only gave me the option to burn at x24. The second disc, however, let me burn it at x10. I'll mess with it again today and see if I can burn a better copy.

Newer drives might not let you burn at slower speeds. The burner in my main machine won't go any slower than 16x. I have been using my old laptop to make slow burns since that's easiest to set up every now and then.

I do have some old PC burners in my parts pile. If you or anyone needs one for slow burning, I'll send one for the postage cost. Though you might be able to find someone tossing an old PC on Craigslist, freecycle, or with someone's trash

you should also use good media. sony or taiyo yuden CDRs work very well. even on a properly calibrated PS1 laser, cheap CDRs will cause problems

I think I was using Memorex for the first few tries. I'm gonna use my desktop's burner to burn at a slower speed like you guys suggested, and I'll also try to pick up some Sony CDRs to burn the game onto.

Anyone have any ideas as to whats going on with the memory card? Could it be causing a short or something? I don't have another card to test with, but I'm headed to the flea market today so maybe they will have another one I can try out.
