PS3 Backwards Compatibility

Post by JordanPlayer »

I am considering buying a Playstation 3 for backwards compatibility and had a question for you guys. I know there is the 60GB PS3 that has hardware BC, and the 80GB that has software BC. The newer Slim has no BC at all. I read a while back that PS2 games running on a PS3 suffered from lots of jaggies in videos/gameplay (some pics were provided). I was wondering if this is really true, the extent of what it looks like, etc. I would definitely choose the 60GB over the 80GB as it plays more of the games as well. The main question is whether I should opt to get a PS3 60GB to play everything, or on the other hand get a PS3 Slim and PS2 Slim if backwards compatible visuals are degraded.

As far as i can tell PS2 and PS1 games look the same if not better on my 60gig PS3. If theres jaggies i cant tell.

I think when it comes down to it, its all about how you much you want to spend on the system.

a 60gig with full bc on ebay is roughly around $400 to $500, depends could also be cheaper.

as a slim ps3 is $300 new and then you can buy a ps2 used for around $60 or maybe even cheaper on craigslist. saving you a little cash.

They looks fine, most of those screens are from very early firmwares of 20 and 60gb ps3s.

The new firmwares actual handle the games much better.

If you don't need the wireless, go with the 20gb model. Much cheaper!

I finally caved and got the slim when I came to the decision of light gun games. Since my PS3 is set up HD I can't play nor do I want Top Gun set up. I try to stay os O.G. as possible. So keep in mind what games you want BC. And because my wife and I love Point Blank way to much that is where I am today.

Yeah, go with the 60GB launch model. As for the PS2 jaggies, like others have said, there was an update to the firmware that added an option for smoothing. Good luck finding a 60GB for a good price!

It depends on if you have a lot of PS2 games and if you play them often. I have over 100 PS2 games so I opted for a used 60GB, even though I still have my FAT PS2. the 20GB and 60GB or even the 80GB with software BC are great bc they save you from having to connect another console to the TV. If you have an HDTV, then the PS2 games will look a little better due to PS3 upscaling.

Even though I have the 60GB, I don't play my PS2 games on it often. Also, you must consider that those BC PS3 have no warranty bc they are used and often are a bit pricier and harder to find. If something goes wrong, usually the laser, then it costs $150 to fix. If you only have a few PS2 games, then I think it's better to go with the slim PS3 bc it's more reliable in addition to having a warranty. Also, having the joy of buying and opening a new system is priceless. For your PS2 gaming needs, just buy a used PS2, put it in storage, and connect it up to get your fix whenever you need to.

BTW, if you go the BC PS3 route, try craigslist. sometimes you'll find some really good deal. I got mine for 325 a year ago for a 60GB complete with some extras, including 1 of 2 yr of warranty left from gamestop. You can find one from 250-300 dollars. Just don't pay more than that. PS3 is a great system. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Yeah, but isn't the launch 60GB model the one that is most prone to the "Yellow Light of Death?"

Yes this is true. Im not sure what the chances are for any 60gig to get YLOD, but i know for sure the numbers are waaaaay smaller than any chance of a Xbox RROD.
