Cleaning and Lubing a Sega Saturn

Post by LucidViolence »

Hey guys, just got my Saturn all chipped up, couldn't be happier! Two questions, I was told that I should lube the disc drive gears, is that so? If thats right what lube due I use? Also for cleaning the lazer should I just get one of them CD lens cleaning kits? One last thing, on the cartage slot. Mine is worn out and I know about the craft knife technique but I wanted to know if there was a better way? Thanks :)

Unless the grease on the gears has been wiped off or has collected a lot of dust, you might just be able to use a toothpick or something to redistribute the blobs that will likely still be there. Otherwise I guess just google for plastic gear grease. I've never had the need to buy any myself. As for the lens cleaning I recommend against buying one of those lens cleaning CDs. The ones I've seen were just a brush or brushes that beat the crap out of the lens while it was trying to focus on the disc. Get a clean q-tip, wet it with alchohol, then dab on a paper towel so its just damp, then very carefully swab the lens. Don't push down, just lightly drag it across.

Yeah, as long as you're careful that should be good to clean any disc drive lens.

You should go to a camera store and pick up some lens cleaning paper. It's lint free.

Just don't use KY or WD-40. They conduct electricity.

white lithium grease is usually what is used in disc drives, it hink its like 5 or 6$, i cant remember, but it will last a hell of a long time (ive got a small tub of it) a little will go a long way

I actually blew a glob of it away with a can of air on accident! The gears still had some on them so I'm not stressing too much. Should I be though?

Re-lube no matter what as preventative maintenance to keep any possible future problems at bay.
