Just got Braid from Steam - How to Use Controller?

Post by SpaceBooger »

And was wondering if anyone figured out how to use a controller for it? Or do we have to use the keyboard?
Thanks

Sorry to reply to my own post, but this deserves a bump:

With the forum down yesterday, I did a little more research and found out that the PC version of Braid only accepts the XBox360 controller. So again, I used the software that let my PS2 Controller (with a usb adapter) to emulate a 360 controller.

If anyone else is interested the software to have any PC controller emulate an XBOX360 controller for games that don't allow button configuration you can get it here: http://www.jayceooi.com/2009/01/19/down ... -pc-games/

note-I did have to edit the "xbox360cemu.ini" file so that the PS2 button alignment matched the 360 perfectly. I can email anyone a modded file if you are using a PS2 Controller on your pc and you don't feel like editing it yourself.

That's good to know about. I hope I never have to use it though. Most games accept my Logitech 'dual shock' style controller. I'm surprised to hear that Braid didn't work, but I just used the keyboard for that game, so I'm not sure if my Logitech would have worked or not.

Basically it comes down to this, and you will see it more and more: Microsoft has deprecated the horrible flawed directinput api introduced during the windows 95 era and replaced it with xinput. Xinput requires the controller to have a specific amount of buttons, axes, and triggers, all in a similar configuration so that games will work out of the box with any xinput device without any further configuration. It also allows for the led that designates which controler nr. you are handling, it has an audio interface for headsets, etc. Needles to say they developed this for all future games for windows games and of course all xbox360 titles.

They developed it and someone else cracked it.
I should break down and get a 360 controller because trying to remember when the game tells me to use the "Y" button I have to use the "triangle" button on my PS2 controller... but I'm going to use what I have and until I get one I'll keep an image of the 360 controller on my bulletin board for reference to button placement.
