Sonic had a great run on the Genesis series in his 2D years. His 3D years run? Eh … not so much. However, Sega hopes to bring Sonic back to his glory days with something they're calling "Project Needlemouse."
"Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay" says Sega of America's Ken Balough. "Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots."
In a Q&A session that Balough did with Gamespot, he said that the game will be a 2D Sonic that will also be in HD. There has been no word yet on what else the game will feature, what systems it will be on or even a release date besides 2010.
The game will not be a remake, as the trailer, shown below, states that the game will be "an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up." The trailer also has the classic singing "Sega" at the beginning, and an outline of the new Hedgehog style can be seen at the end.

Check out the trailer link below, can SEGA finally bring back some of the glory from the 2D years.
