So I'm thinking about putting a mini entertainment system in my bedroom and think the Gamecube might be a low-cost solution for the gaming portion.
So my question is what are all the possibilities for a modded Gamecube?
How is the emulation and homebrew scene?
Can you run software off anything besides optical discs?
Any other cool little tricks?
So What All Can One Do With A Modded Gamecube?
Re: So What All Can One Do With A Modded Gamecube?
i know you can run nes, snes, genesis roms on a modded gamecube but i dont know how well they are emulated.
if your looking for an entertainment centre for your house then go with a modded xbox.emulatoes countless systems including ps1,n64 and mame.
also stick xbox media centre on there and stream all your movies to your xbox and watch in 720phd with the composite cables.
or put an upgrade the hdd in a xbox, anything up to 1tb if you wish and you can store all your movies, music, games, emulators on there and xbmc will play most if not all file types.
just another option for you to think about.

Well there is the Sd Media Launcher that lets you run emulators and homebrew of a sd card. And it does not require any modding.

This site has been of great use for me in the past. But i'd have to say i have had most use of the snes and mega drive emulators.
Then there is Gcos wich is a good and free way to play imports.

I'd recomend browsing these two sites both have a lot of stuff for the gamecube.

Re: So What All Can One Do With A Modded Gamecube?
I'll second the xbox choice...they are cheap, maybe only a little more than a gamecube, and can do almost everything a media center would want to do - emulate anything very well pre psx, and play any kind of audio/video provided it isn't hi-def. They are super easy to mod too, just an action replay and one of three games. I think a forum member here has a kit he passes around for a couple bucks, so you don't even have to buy the action replay or game.
But if you're set on a gamecube -
How is the emulation and homebrew scene?
I think anything up to n64 (maybe including, for some things) is pretty good.
Can you run software off anything besides optical discs?
You can buy memory cards that serve as sd card adapters...not sure on the cost for these. There's also the bba adapter, you can use it to stream games from your pc, though I think the speed is not quite up to snuff, and they are expensive. Of course, to run software off discs, you either have to buy a full size case, or use mini dvds
Are you planning on using a chip, or the action replay coder card?

Well, if I get an XBox, it will probably go in my office whereas I have a Gamecube that's sitting unused since I also have a Wii. Also, I think I would like the GC library more than the Xbox for the setup -- so just assume I'm going with a Cube here.
We can save the XBox talk for another thread.

I'm really keeping my options open for modding, but I may lean towards the cheapes/easiest as I'm not a huge tinkerer.dlmvii wrote: But if you're set on a gamecube -

Re: So What All Can One Do With A Modded Gamecube?
There are some N64 games that were made to run on the Cube. I've seen Mario 64, Yoshi's Story, Pilot Wings 64, Duke Nukem 64, and some more over at thepurplecube.com (look under the "misc" section at the top of the list, they also have emulator/rom images there too). I think I read some where that the Zelda 64 games remade for Gamcube were hacked and they used that software to make other 64 games run on the Cube. Purple Cube has a few of them, I'm sure there's more floating around.

I've had good luck running SNES emulator snes9x on the gamecube. I use Action Replay to run sdload in order to run snes9x off an SD card. It works well.
As others mentioned, I would recommend the Xbox for playing emulators rather than the Gamecube. I would also recommend the PSP if you prefer the handheld. For the cube, I would stick with playing GC & Gameboy Player games.

PS, you can also use the Gameboy Player to launch GBA homebrew.

I second that.noiseredux wrote:PS, you can also use the Gameboy Player to launch GBA homebrew.
I only use my GameCube to run my SuperCard on a GBPlayer. Got the player for $9.99 at GameStop a month or so ago.
