What system has the highest percentage of good games?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

What system has the highest percentage of good games?

Post by dsheinem »

This topic seems like a logical spin-off of the "what systems do you not want to collect?" and the "IGN top 25 consoles list" threads...

Most popular consoles (NES, PS2, Atari 2600, Wii, etc.) have a ton of shovelware, so that pretty much rules them out. Even if they have more good games overall, their percentage isn't great.

That might mean that smaller/less popular systems would have the best odds of having good games. I would guess some might argue for the Dreamcast, for example, as it has a medium sized library most of which is fairly decent. Others might vote for the Neo-Geo, although most of those games fall into one genre (fighting) which means that if you aren't a fan of fighters, a Neo-Geo is a little less attractive.

What made me think of this? The 32X. There are only 34 games, over 2/3 of which I would say are decent. (The only real stinkers in the lot are BC Racers, Cosmic Carnage, Metal Head, T-Mek, the 4 or 5 CD-32X games, and maybe 2-3 others depending on your threshold for "decent"). Even though the system tanked, I'd say it had a pretty good average...

I think its the PS2, I have about 160 great PS2 games. Every other system of mine doesn't even touch that.

The total number good games =/= best percentage.

Even if there are 200 good games for the system, there are around 2000 released. That's only 10%. Hell, even if there are 500 decent PS3 games, that is only 25%. Again, popular systems tend to have have much more shovelware than less popular systems.

That's a really tough one...
Virtual Boy? :)
I'm kinda serious.
Think about it -- they were pretty much all first-party Nintendo games...

Here's a study (and links to the full thing) done on recent consoles -

Summary: The more popular, the higher percentage of crap.

I'd say PS2 isn't the one, if it has 160 good games, that's a pretty small percentage considering there are over 3000 games for it. I'd say... hmmm, I'd don't know which console I'd pick. As the TC stated though, the 2600, NES, and PS2 certainly aren't the winners here. They were all crap magnets.

Come on now. Most of those first party games were awful.

That's an interesting example - there are 22 games in total for the system. Like most people, I have only played a few of them back when they were on display to try out in stores. Any VB collectors who can speak to the percentage of these games which are any good? Or is it like the Atari 7800, which even though it has around 50 games, probably only half are decent.
