Decision: A32CD or Jaguar?

Post by lisalover1 »

I've got some spare cash to spend on a new game console, and I'm trying to decide between the Amiga 32 CD and the Atari Jaguar. One one hand, the Jaguar has more games that are interesting to me, but the reliability of the system is only so-so, and because it's cartridge based, games cost more than CD games. For the A32CD, cheap CD games and backups can be played, along with the original amiga compilation disks. However, it's a bit more expensive, and doesn't seem as cool as the Jaguar. :) So, which one should I go for?

I'd get an Amiga 32CD simply because there are many CD compilations out there which can be played off the bat. The Jaguar CD is imho the second least interesting CD-based system (right after the CDi) but that's just me talking.

I've never heard that the Jaguar is a technically unreliable system. The CD add-on is a disaster and is apparently impossible to find in working condition, but you should be okay with the base unit. Still, I find it hard to recommend the system. The cliche about the Jaguar is that Tempest 2000 is the only game worth playing on it, and for me at least, the cliche is true. There are a few okay titles, but nothing earth-shaking. That said, if a bunch of games look interesting to you, go for it! Just make sure Tempest 2000 is one of those games. :P

One of the things that I don't like about the Amiga32CD is that the controller looks positively UGLY. The first time I saw it, I thought the thing was upside-down! The Jaguar's controller isn't too great, either, but it's a Saturn pad compared to this thing! Anyway, just to clarify, the Amiga 32CD can run backups without modification, right?

EDIT: After looking through the ACD's library of games, I wasn't able to find many games I would be interested in, and very few I've ever even heard of. Is it worth the system just to play original Amiga games? I see a TON of Amiga games I'm interested in, and I really don't want to buy an Amiga computer; I strongly prefer playing my games on consoles.

The cd32 can play burned cd's but there are some brands that might not work. For instance Verbatim cd's don't but i have had good expirience with Tdk.

If the controller is a problem you can use any nine pin controller.

And the compilaton discs that you can get for it are simply awesome.

CD32 all the way, I think. You can get 3rd party controller that looks just like a Genesis pad (it will cost you a bit as they're not too common), and I think you can use a Genesis pad for most of the games.
