Monitor issues UPDATE: 9/12/09!

Post by Mod_Man_Extreme »

Well I was at Goodwill today and decided to get a new CRT monitor for my Dreamcast. After perusing their selection I managed to see a nice looking Sony Multiscan15sx for $15! sadly though, when I brought it home I saw that the connector at the end of the cord had the pins screwed up (bent, and generally fucked up). Is there any way to fix this or should I just take it back and get a different monitor?

I've heard that this particular monitor is pretty nice and has a good dot pitch so I'd prefer it if I could save it.

EDIT: UPDATE!

I just got my VGA box in yesterday and it all looks great, so I decided to give the screen a wipedown and clean the cabinet, but to my chagrin the anti glare coating seems to have somehow come off in a spot. Is there any way to fix this at all, or am I stuck with a nice monitor with an uneven bright spot?

Here's a pic so you guys can see:

I assume it's too trashed to simply straighten out the pins? If you feel confident, you could try cutting off the end and splicing it with a good connector.

Thanks, but I've got an update on the situation.

I got the pins straightened out, but not whenever I plug it it the monitor just starts clicking and buzzing followed by it shutting off and turning back on repeating the process all over again all with no picture on the screen.

Hm, that's a different problem. Judging by the symptoms it sounds like a bad power supply.

Yeah, I've decided to just take it back and try for a different one.

They had a nice looking 20in. flatscreen CRT made by NEC there for $30, does that seem like a good deal and is NEC known for making good CRT's?

The only thing I have ever heard about them is they generally don't seem to display there max res, or near it flawlessly. They suffer from blurriness. I dont know if that was just about 1 range of there screens but that is all I have ever heard about them.

But as the DC doesn't run that high it shouldn't be a problem.

Cool, my local goodwill has had quite a few CRT monitors to choose from lately so I'm trying to see which would be best.

Yes, NEC makes great products. $30 is a decent deal.

I'd snatch a flat NEC for $30 in a heartbeat.
