Nostalgia Vs. Man
I'm hosting a classic video game tournament, (nes, snes, sega genesis, n64)... any ideas for challenges? (Up to 20 players.)
NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Sega Genesis, ps1, ps2, ps3, x box 1.
Re: Nostalgia Vs. Man
Only those four systems?
Updated - Well for the Nintendos:
Score/skill based:
NES – Gradius
SNES – Power Lode Runner
N64 – Bangai-o (import) or Blastcorps
Competitive:
NES – Super Dodge Ball or Joust/Balloon Fight
SNES – Weaponlord
N64 – Forsaken64 – its not mainstream but it is fairly balanced and heavily skill based
I tried to go for games not as well played as the obivous choices.

Up to 20 players total? You got specific genres you're looking for? Would your prefer competitive two player, or score-based games?

Re: Nostalgia Vs. Man
I suggest having a torunament for two players.
For example you plug Joust in your NES and let two players play. When they die or hit a certain playtime (So as to avoid delays and such), whichever comes first you take their score.
Now, to make every game count the same but, at the same time, reward being better at a game you should follow Twin Galaxies' method.
They give 100 points (100%) to the best score and then points to the rest according to how close they were. For example if the 1st place has 4000 in game points he gets +100 to his overall score. If at the same game I have 400 points I get +10 (A ten percent).
I suggest the following games for this:
Joust, Smash TV, Tetris (With one played blindfolded and the otehr must indicate him, bonus stage FTW), random two-player shooter and something else, I'm lazy now.

Have people compete in some obscure game they've probably never played before.
Or Superman 64 multiplayer mode.

Rampart is great for multiplayer head-to-head. You can find it for the SNES or Genesis. There is an NES version as well, but I don't know how much they changed it.
Also, get one of the bomberman games (but not the first one). I think the ones on the SNES and Genesis may even support four players simultaneously if you have a multitap.
If you have a powerpad for your NES, I recommend tracking down a copy of "Super Team Games." It's a weird, fun game with lots of different modes and even a team event or two for up to six people (3 per team).
Or, you could just pick a decent fighting game and have people duke it out. During the 16-bit era, you usually didn't even have to unlock stuff to get full multiplayer functionality.
NBA Jam is also a lot of fun.
Oh! And Ice Hockey on the NES is surprisingly fun, and it's simple enough that anyone can pick it up and play it without too much trouble.

The Adventures Of Batman And Robin for the Genesis (AKA Bat-Contra), I've been on quite the kick with this title lately and honestly love it. It's a run n' gun and shmup mix that is very well designed and also features co-op for some pretty heated multi-player matchups.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

Amazing game really. SO hard though. Not Silver Surfer (nes) hard but very hard none the less.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:The Adventures Of Batman And Robin for the Genesis (AKA Bat-Contra), I've been on quite the kick with this title lately and honestly love it.
