Is there a better way to play Tempest on MAME?

Post by UBERTRON777 »

I really want to play Tempest because I never have before and it looks like my kind of game, yet I do not own an arcade machine and I'm finding it very difficult to play in MAME. Obviously, my keyboard does not have analog control so whenever I move my ship it skips tracks. I can't really map the control onto my mouse either. Is there a way to play this more accurately without having to go to the arcade?

You need a spinner. If you're handy, you can hack one together from a VCR and an old mouse. Or you can buy one, but they're pretty pricey these days.

I've been planning to buy this one for a while now, but like Hatta said, pretty expensive for what I'd be using it for.

Build yourself a spinner, it's easy and commercial spinners are so expensive they are not worth it.

I play in making 4 for Warlords and such but one for Tempest is a must.

There's a version of Tempest 2000 on the PC. It's a port of the Jaguar game as far as I know, and it's a hell of a lot of fun. Works fine with a keyboard. I played the demo to death in 1996, but I never did get the full version.

Also for Saturn as Tempest 2000 and Tempest X3 for Playstation which apparently supports the NegCon which would probably be pretty cool.

You could also try tracking down the original Microsoft Arcade.

It has a pretty decent Tempest port that plays a lot like the original and works great with the mouse.

This reminds me that I wanted to hack together or buy a Jag and/or PS1 rotary controller before the Tempest TR in December. Anyone have one for sale?
