New info on FFXIII from GamesCom 2009...

Post by Flak Beard »

Maybe some of these details will put a bit of the fanboy banter to rest. I've heard so many boid and ridiculous claims of the last year in regards to visual disparity and disc space. People simply took the PS3 FFXIII demo size, and thought they were geniuses by doing basic math and claiming that it "must" be 10 or more DVDs for the 360 version. It doesn't work that way. Anyway, it looks like the 360 version will be 3 discs and look nearly identical. Both camps are going to be able enjoy the same fine game.

From the The Magic Box website...

• Final Fantasy XIII will ship simultaneously on PS3 and Xbox 360 in North America in Spring 2010
• PS3 version is 90% completed and the 360 version is 70% completed
• The Xbox 360 version will most likely fit on 3 DVDs
• The content and visuals between the two version will be almost identical, there maybe some subtle differences
• The English voice-over will be lip-synced, so no dual language track is planned
• Two brand new characters will be revealed soon in Japan. One is a young girl with silvery blond hair tied in a ponytail, and wear a sci-fi schoolgirl outfit, pink pleated skirt and lavish white top
• The second is Sazh's little son, with an adorable afro and innocent smile
• A new area called Lake Bilge: The Waters Stilled is unveiled
• The Paradigm Shift system was shown, in which your character's setting can be modified. Available options are Overwhelm, Peacemaker and Aggression

The back and forth comments on large gaming sites about this story are hilarious.
It's either extolling the virtue of blu-rays and how the ps3 only needs 1 disc, or how blu-ray sucks because it's only 2x and that switching discs isn't a big deal because it will be nostalgic.

Fanboys are fucking awesome.

I've heard even wilder things than all the disc space talk. Someone made a statement about how they only included a black character in the game because they needed to appeal to the 360 fanbase. Talk about irrational thought.

This game is sounding crappier and crappier by the day. Where have the days of my traditional turn-based RPG gone?

Well, Sony fanboys might actually have something worth complaining for, about this game going multi platform.

it seams, that the latest ff13 screenshots, look worse than the ones that came out 2 years ago. Which is kind of lame.

Though some most say it's the 360's fault, some say it could actually be the ps3's fault. personally I don't care, but I still think SE should have made the better version and then downgrade it for the other console.

I hate it when companies try to save fanboys from crying, and end up ruining the game for everyone. I don't think ghostbuster's should have looked crap on the 360, just because they had trouble with the ps3 version

To downgrade the graphics would be to reduce the poly count, which means they would have to create a completely different set of models for the 360 version (really it would be a subset, but still a large subset). For a project as large as this one that's a lot of manhours that you have to spend to create a 360 version.

And to be fair, I'm sure some of it was that they realized that the original graphics didn't scale on the hardware once they tossed in all their cool effects. Look at the early screenshots of World of Warcraft compared to the release product. The early stuff looked much better.

People very quickly want to blame the 360 and the fact it is multi platform now.

Perhaps the graphics were just too ambitious to begin with? Sometimes developers find they need to scale back the visuals to get a solid framerate. The game could be unbelievably gorgeous, but if it is choppy then people will just bitch about that instead.

I see the minor differences in the screen shots, but the game still looks great. Certainly nothing for anyone to get teary eyed over.

question: will this be the first final fantasy to have a multi-console release? (not including the personal computer).
Don't ask me about the price ;)
