Your favorite games that piss you off

Post by miked »

So to try out my new arcade stick I booted up Street Fighter Alpha 2(My favorite SF) via MAME on a modded Xbox. I hadn't played through arcade mode in at least 2 years, only multiplayer.

I start playing and its like Im having the game of my life. Pulling off combos I didn't even know I could do, alpha counters, and almost perfect timing. Then here comes Sagat..................FUCK!!!!

SO MANY TIGER FLASHES. SFA2 still remains my favorite in the series, but Sagat is a bastard in this game. Maybe I got used to SF4 Sagat, who has never been much of a problem. I finally sink so low that I crouch in the corner till he gets in range for a sweep kick, then beat Akuma on the first try.

Anybody else have a game you love but just pisses you off? I thought I was going to throw my new stick through my TV.

Heh, i've gotten very bad at some of the games I liked over years - just a few that pop into my head that I love, but I suck at:

In The Hunt (Sega Saturn) - A unique shooter where you are a small submarine. I can't get passed the 3rd level now (with that huge gigantic stone statue that chases you).

The Last Blade (Dreamcast) - the Last Boss of this game is super cheap. Seriously, you think you are winning and then all of a sudden he does his invincible super attack that takes nearly all your life. If you manage to block it, you are left with a tiny bit of life left (usually because he already hit you several times).

Super Smash Bros (GC) - We have this at my work's break room. I love the game, but I always get destroyed by my coworkers who seem to know every trick in the book. (Really hate Jigglypuff!)

Virtua Fighter 5 (PS3) - Another game we have at my work's break room. I am amazed at the depth of this game, but I am no match for my coworkers. Half the time my attacks get countered :(

Gex the Gecko games, and a handful of annoying racer games. I dunno why I still play them.
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.

PLOK: I've never been able to beat this game without a cheat device...I know, it's pathetic.

Street Fighter 3rd Strike: The first time I ever beat Gill, I stood up and pranced around, keeping myself from noticing that he got back up and killed me. And I remember it every time I play him.

Total Recall: One of the hardest games I've ever played. But I'm still absolutely in love with it. Mainly because 8-bit depictions of Michael Ironside are amazing.

Dungeon Explorer because of it great music, pleasant graphics and Gauntlet style gameplay. Extremely frustrating those little cockroach lookers as there is no fight option like in Gauntlet only throwing swords or balls, so when colliding with enemies, it's usually death for you. They also shoot back. Has anyone here played this and gotten farther than the first level or past the bridge?

Barnyard Blast: Swine of The Night

I swear, this is one of the few good games that Ubisoft has made. The humor is top notch and the idea is great, but the gameplay is severely unpolished. It's reminiscent of the classic Castlevanias. If it was released in the 8 bit days, then we would just call this hard, but nowadays, the unforgiving nature is just too sad thanks to the clunky weapons system.

It is beatable, but only with very good reflexes and a stupendous amount of practice. This is a game that we would all praise in the past for being difficult, but beatable by skilled gamers. To minimize the ridiculous amount of repetition that it requires, I decided to use an infinite lives code to attempt each room at a time. My amount of lives stayed infinite, but my health did not. I still conquered each level the old fashioned way, but I hadn't the patients to restart the whole game (I wanted to beat it in one day).

In the end I won, but Mr. Final Boss required some wicked pattern memorization. It was a rewarding experience, even with the use of a code.

Most fighting games, really. I seem to always fall in love with the bottom tier characters, and then get smoked repeatedly by people who have no shame in picking the most broken characters ever created.

The only fighting games I can consistently enjoy are Street Fighter III series and King of Fighters series, because even though my favorite characters are usually bottom-middle tier, the characters are still balanced enough that it makes little difference. Can't say the same for games like Guilty Gear X or BlazBlue, not by a long shot.

I enjoy Darkstalkers and Last Blade too, but those series don't have the same competitive environment that SF3, KOF, GGX or BB has, mainly because nobody freakin' plays them. Only the good die young (or go unplayed, I guess).

Rise of Nations on Hardest, and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Also Megarace is really hard if you fail too many times and have to do the Tokyo race.

Earthbound. You have to grind so much at the end. It's a bitch.
