Genesis Model 2, Mod RF unit to Composite?

Post by emwearz »

Does anyone know if it is possible to mod a model 2 Mega Drives RF unit (Using it for its connector into the console) to work with Composite cables? The din only have 3 pins (Video, Audio, Ground) so I cant imagine it should be too hard? Anyone have any links that could help me out.

The only thing I have found so far is this:
http://www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/genesisav.htm
However as it says
Note! The numbering sequence on this diagram is NOT the proper numbering, and won't match the numbers on your connector.
Im not sure which pins do what if they are not displayed correctly.

PS: Sorry if this has been asked and answered before.

I use the A/V cables that came with the 32x for composite on my model 2. Theres no need to mod the system.

Why don't you just buy a Genesis AV cable?

I don't have a 32X.
Why don't you just buy a Genesis AV cable?
I could, but if I could I would prefer to make my own (as the RF unit is worthless to me once I get a cable).

Just buy a cable and hold onto or trade in the RF, making your own cable will be a pain in the ass and isn't worth your time given that most homemade cables usually look like crap.

I would still like to have a stab at them, as the main reason I want to change my cables is for better IQ if they look bad I will buy some online, but at the moment I would love to have a crack at making my own.

So any resources?

None that I know of, honestly. I'm all about getting the best possible audio and visual connections out of my consoles, so I only buy official cables.

I understand that and I have official composite/component cables for all my consoles (My TV doesn't take S-Video) at the moment, finding one in the wild is close to impossible (1st or 3rd party) even if I found a Sega branded cable today, I would still want to have a shot at my own cable, just as a hands on experiment.

Thanks for your advice though.

Just to let people know, I ended up making one myself and it works perfectly. You can read how to make one in a small guide I made.

Hold on is it in stereo or dual mono?

As I remember the RF Adapter for the Genesis 2 only has the pins to take the composite and mono signals from the Genesis 2's AV Multiout.
