Dreamcast + VGA (and me) Mentioned on gdgt front page

Post by racketboy »

I don't know if any of you frequent gdgt (cool new gadget site started by ex-Engadget founders/editors), but the Dreamcast + VGA as well as I got mentioned on the front page.

I just find it amusing when I see my name on a site I use on a daily basis :)

Very cool. I just ordered one of those VGA boxes from you the other day too. Can't wait to try it out.

Just say the HDMI converter that you posted a link to and now want one. If I buy the VGA Cable how would you convert the sound to R/W Audio cables? And from there they would just plug straight to the converter and it would play through the TV or Audio Sound system?

At RadioShack you should be able to find some combination of cables to take a 3.5mm stereo plug and turn it into 2 RCA audio plugs.

Just took a close look at the pic and say the 3.5mm plug. This is so great just put my order in today. Can't wait to see how it looks and it opens up space for my S-Video port.

HDMI 1 - DirecTV HD DVR
HDMI 2 - Xbox 360
HDMI 3 - Dreamcast
HDMI 4 - PS3 Slim (soon)

Composite 1 - oXbox
Composite 2 - Gamecube
Composite 3 - Wii
S-Video 4 - Saturn
TV - NES/32x, Genesis, Sega CD

- Dreamcast VGA Converter Box ($20)
- VGA & R/L Stereo Audio to HDMI Converter w/ DC Adapter ($40)
- VGA cable (pilfered from work, we had dozens)
- mini -> RCA R/L ($2)
- HDMI cable ($4)

$66 total, not too shabby considering most VGA to HDMI converters run for $130.
Do I need the box or can I just use the Dreamcast VGA cable straight to the converter.

If your TV supports HDMI, it likely also supports component. You really should use that for the Xbox, Gamecube and Wii because it will make them look much better. Also it will let you use 480p for many of the games.

I always confuse the two. Yes, it's component RGB/RW.

Do I really need the VGA converter box or can I just use the cable and save myself $6?

Oh snap! Didn't know about that HDMI converter. I have been using an Audio Authority VGA to component converter to hit 480p on my VGA-less LCD HDTV.

Hmm the HDMI converter sure looks interesting. Currently I'm plugging my VGA cable into my Viera's PC in. The only problem there is that it uses the audio from the component in. So I have the audio from the VGA box plugged into my Joytech Control Centre 540C component switcher and select the input from there. It's fiddly but it works. It would make things much easier if I could just plug it straight into HDMI and have the audio there too. Would save on having lots of cables everywhere.

Is the HDMI converter passive or active?
