Damn you Fest!!!

Post by vash23n »

I am playing Rogue Squadron for the N64 and, so far, I have found the game to be pretty challenging, but not to overboard as to make me want to throw my N64 as hard as I can into a wall. Well, except for 2 levels. The defection level where you first have to wrap up and destroy an AT-AT with your tow cable took me FOREVER. I mean like 4-5 years... okay there was like 3 years between the first time I played it and the next. It was this level that forced me to put the game down for so long. Recently, I was able to beat that level and have been playing pretty easily until I got to this freaking Rescue on Fest level. Now there are 3 AT-ATs and if you mess up even once you can pretty much assume you failed the mission. I have been able to take down all 3 AT-ATs a couple times, but that usually leaves me with only one of the AT-PT walkers I am supposed to save still alive. I play through seamlessly, destroying each AT-AT quickly, taking out as many laser turrets as possible between each. Then, once the last remaining AT-PT enters the straightaway between the mountains I am faced with an onslaught of mobile laser turrets.

Usually I can't even take all three of the AT-ATs down before the mission is over. I have tried every different order I can imagine. Those rare times I can get all three down it takes like 10 seconds for my last AT-PT remaining to be blown up. They make it seem like you should still have all 3 AT-PTs left after you destroy the AT-ATs giving you some leeway for the waves of laser turrets and tie fighters you have to face afterwards. Am I missing something?

I know this is the most confusing couple of paragraphs I have ever written and I hope it is easier to read than it was to type (all these ATs and PTs and PPs and BooBies). Any suggestions would be great. At least it felt good to vent a little.

I know what you mean, I had trouble with this level too for a bit.

Hopefully this is relevant to your interests.

Now, it's been many years since I've touched that mission, but I recall getting at least a silver on it. As I recall, there's two things you need to get down.

1. Get that cable wrapping as good as you can. The more you practice the more you get the rhythm, until you end up nearly hitting all four legs due to how sharp your turns are.

2. As I recall, the order you want to do the AT-ATs in is to start with the ones closest to the AT-PTs and work your way outwards.

Damn that player is so smooth. It's like watching a demo. I feel like I have done everything pretty identical. He makes it look so easy, even taking time to get all the storm troopers and buildings. It must be my technique with the tow cable. I use the booster, but I am all up and down with the steering so maybe I need to work on just going as smooth as possible. I feel a little bold right now so I am going to give it a shot!

Phew! Did it. Only got a bronze, but I am going to give it a few years before I try for anything higher. Only off by one friendly save (only one AT-PT made it) Thanks guys!

I clicked on the Youtube link to see what level you were talking about and it turns out that that's the very level that stopped me playing the game! I could never get past it. It's impossible.

This was about 9 years ago, and then Rogue Squadron II came out, so I never went back to it - I'll have to give it another shot.

The best part is, it gets harder. I'm playing through it now too. I didn't think I was going to make it through Sullust, and I'm still stuck on Seerdon's Revenge. But hey, it wouldn't be much fun without some challenge.

ugh I can't imagine it getting any harder. I do pretty well unless missile turrets are involved! I hate those things. I have infinite lives on just so I can suicide crash into them. Not hard to destroy, but I like how I can be flying away after having destroyed one and a missile it shot off 5 seconds ago blows me up.
