So, I'm on a music spree. I'm generally more into classic rock (pink floyd, the doors, zep, etc...) and heavy metal(steppenwolf, black sabbath, etc...), some harder(mastodon). Also a big fan of punk, (leftover crack, aus rotten, sloppy seconds).
I'm looking for suggestions of albums to pick up, listen, buy, whatever. I want to know what everyone thinks is a must have, even deep cuts and things that might be obscure.

Re: help me pick music
Beatles greatest hits for sure and their latter albums like sgt pepper, magical mystery tour. Hendrix is amazing especially if you like a bluesy feel. Weezer's first two albums are perrty good "say it ain't so" is a great chill out song. Oh deftones are pretty dope too White Pony is a masterpiece of modern metal. Peral jams ten is a great album but most of their other stuff is a bit lackluster.
Re: help me pick music
Here are a few albums I would recommend:
Joy Division's Substance since it covers a lot of there good songs.
Akercocke's Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone. It's their most progressive album and mix plenty of good Death and Black Metal with clean vocals. Heavily Satanist though, so not for everyone.
Radiohead's OK Computer. It's simply one of their best releases.
Opeth's Blackwater Park. It's just a huge mix of styles that it covers every base in metal music.
I don't know how much you're into foreign music, but I could recommend a few spanish hard rock albums that are a definite must have.

Metallica's Ride the Lightning is a masterpiece. My favorite album of all time.
If you like black sabbath then probably you'll like yourself some grunge. If so,
Alice in Chains : Dirt
Nirvana : Nevermind.

Frampton Comes Alive is amazing.
Boston's debut album Boston is one of my favorite records. Every song except the last one is really strong.
Deep Purple's Machine Head is a jam.

Kimock man, f'n kimock. Try this one.
Yonder Mountain String Band is keeping bluegrass relevant by making it danceable. Check it out.
Of course, the Dead are always worth listening to. Check out the legendary Cornell 77 show, or for something a little different, this show featuring Branford Marsalis.
As you can tell, I'm a big archive.org fan. If a band doesn't let folks tape, I pretty much don't bother listening to them. There's a ton of great stuff I won't bother picking out examples of. One of the most interesting recent musical developments is heavily electronica influenced jam. Things like Sound Tribe Sector 9, Particle, and Lotus. I also really dig the jazz-rock stuff. Check out Karl Denson, Robert Walter, and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. And since you like classic rock, check out Raq. They've got an awesome late 70s early 80s prog rock feel to them.

sloppy seconds are one of the worst bands from indianapolis. they play here pretty frequently. it's a bummer.
but yeah, anyway, not trying to just dis your taste in music. check out propagandhi's first two records if you're into punk like that ("how to clean everything" and "less talk, more rock").
recently i've been listening to the new PUNCH LP. worth your time. trust me.

Rage Against The Machine
Any of their three albums is great stuff. Their "fourth" album, Renegades, is all studio covers from a lot of known artists. A lot of people like it, but I'm not a fan. The self titled debut, Evil Empire, and The Battle of Los Angeles albums... all great stuff.
Also, their live material is like crack, I can't get enough of it. Unfortunately they don't have a whole lot of live material released on CD but they do have 3 DVDs. One great thing about them live is Morello's variation in his guitar solos, coming up with more and more wacky shit. They're just incredible live though, so much energy. Putting them in a studio is like putting fire flies in a bottle. They're still great, but you can't seem them fly around.
