Do you guys pay attention to the weekly sales charts on Steam? I just found out that they are reported based on revenue, not by units sold. That makes it extra impressive that some of the highest revenue generating games are the cheapest. This week, Foreign Legion: Buckets of Blood made the number 6 spot within its first week while the game only costs $5.24 on sale. Secret of Monkey Island has consistently been in the top 10 since its release while going for $10 bucks. Killing Floor is $20 and it has been in the top 10 sales chart for weeks on end.
Somehow Counterstrike, despite being an old game, continues to pull in sales that have landed it a top 10 spot for as long as I have been attending to the chart, as have sales for The Orange Box.
Each week there is a sale, that game is almost destined to have a spot in the top 10 for the week.
It's fascinating to me that the games that costs the least amount of money for the consumer can bring in the most amount of money for the developer. Still, there are games like Aion, which has topped the charts for awhile, and it is expensive $60 for a presale, plus you will have to pay a monthly subscription. It seems they have worked the hype machine correctly.
It's amazing what a good sale or a low price tag can do for

People, en masse, are more likely to buy a game if its cheap or a good deal. Especially if it's a good game.
