Replacing save battery in a Master system game-help please.

Post by isaacsquared »

I traded for a copy of Phantasy Star (yay!). The save doesn't work (boo!), so I'm trying to replace the save battery. I've already got the battery, I just need to replace it. SMS carts just have a couple phillips screws in them, so it was easy enough to open up.

The problem is, I can't get the old battery out. Has anybody replaced a SMS battery before? I think it may be soldered on to the battery prongs, but I'm not sure. Just looking to get the save working again, hopefully without jacking up any of the rest of the cart.

I had the same problem when I replaced the battery on my copy of Phantasy Star 3. I ended up just clipping that piece of metal and soldering a wire in its place.

The battery is mounted the same as any other cart, the + and - legs are not soldered onto the battery, they are spot welded. You can cut them off the battery with some effort, but you cannot solder them back on. Some people like to use the "tape trick," after you cut the legs off the old battery you tape them firmly onto the new battery. I don't like this, it doesn't feel solid to me. You can buy new batteries that already have the legs spot welded on, in which case all you have to do is desolder the old battery and solder the new one in place, but those batteries cost a little more money than regular loose batteries (and you said you already bought a new battery).

Additionally, I bought some low profile battery holders that I was able to fit inside a SNES games.
