Everytime I play few certain back-ups (one being Last Blade 2: Final Edition), I can hear a high pitched hissing noise coming from my console. I hope I'm not causing any harm to my lens.
Has anyone else experienced the same thing?

I get that hissing sound when I try to play my legit copy of evolution 2. I don't know if it is straining the lens but I can't take the sound.

Use TuxTheWise's Dreamcast games. He optimizes them to reduce stress on the DC.

That shit hurts my ears yo! And now that you mention it, I can hear it even when I play some of my official games. I just hope my DC isn't slowly duying on me.xzeronature wrote:I get that hissing sound when I try to play my legit copy of evolution 2. Many of Tux's games are optimized and play better (without as much lens stress) than the original DC games.
Re: I think I'm straining my Dreamcast lens
Most of the "lens stress" and otherwise additional noise associated with backups is caused by most of the backup copies not retaining their native file orders. The files get scrambled randomly across the disk, and so the lens has to travel much further distances on average.
It's only really a common issue with Dreamcast games due to the unorthodox method that we were forced to rip the data in the early years of the machine. All the other disc based formats can basically be ripped as 1:1 copies by simply placing the disc in the PC. With Dreamcast, you have to take the bare files and rebuild your own image. That's why the file order gets lost when less informed people do it.
