So here in America we don't really have a huge monster hunter fanbase. None of my friends here in philly have played it.
I was thinking of picking it up for the ps2, but i realized that it was a pretty old game at this point and finding a copy on ebay mint with book and everything is proving to be a more expensive endeavor for something i might not really like.
So i pirated (shhhh) a copy of monster hunter 2 unite. I think thats what it was called. The newest one on the psp. I was greeted with very little story and an overwhelming amout of text for the simplest things. How to use a map? 5 paragraphs of text.
My question to you is this: are the monster hunter games worth it? What is the appeal? The japanese LOVE them, and the one on the wii looks fantastic. However, i find getting started in them a little daunting. Should i just wait for the wii one and forsake the psp/ps2 games? Do i need to start with the first one? Are they chronological or more in the vein separate games?
basically, should i stick with it?

Re: monster hunter questions
I really did like the game while I played it but it was SOOO hard. The camera on the psp versions suck so much and with the lack of a lock-on feature I couldn't hardly get past the tutorials even.
The web's first video game public library! http://videogameexperiment.com rents all games for free and sells them for less than Ebay and Amazon! Plus we take anything in on trade-in.
Re: monster hunter questions
yeah- the psp sucks at looking while moving in a 3-d space. It has these really beautiful games that would be fantastic if there was another stick. Yup, this old tune.videogameexperiment wrote:I really did like the game while I played it but it was SOOO hard. I was hoping that capcom made due with the limitations of the psp rather than assume it is a ps2. sucks that there isn't a lock on. Might skip this series and wait for the wii version then...
Re: monster hunter questions
YES its very worth it (btw the new one out is monster hunter freedom unite its an updated version of MHF2 and you dont need to start with the first one just start with this. you also get a cat friend to help so its not as daunting ) one miss conception is that since it has an rpg feel it should have a story. but its not really an rpg. its funny i said the same thing you just asked when i started out playing. it was fun but not great and had room for improvment. BUT! as me and my friend played we found it was hard to put down. eventually we became addicts. i promiss once you start understanding things you will enjoy yourself. the game is hard but its a game of skill. so if you want challenging you got it. as you go you will develop skills and be able to take down a dragon that you previously thought to be impossible. the series is a rare treasure that people should pick up more. just hang in its a big game and will keep you busy for awhile.
one more thing. the game needs NO lock on. its part of the skill to be able to maneuver your camera and aim.

Re: monster hunter questions
Well said my friend! Its a huge game, I'm clocked at 496 hours with freedom 2 and expect to do around 20 more with this one before I move onto Unite. Now don't get us wrong you can maybe beat the solo missions from this game in about 50-60 hours, but you will need help for the guild missions which are very overwhelming.weasels wrote:the series is a rare treasure that people should pick up more. just hang in its a big game and will keep you busy for awile.

Lock on is not needed at all, it would ruin the game and I think capcom did the best they could with the limitations the psp gave them. You just have to press L and the camera rotates to your back, and you can use your index finger to move the d-pad which your thumb is handling analog stick duties. This game tests the limits of the psp analog and can tell you I'm on my third one so be careful.
Since improvement in the game is getting better weapons and armor, then the games develops into an addiction of wanting to get more and more. The gameplay is very deep, at first you can look around the many faqs and wiki sites out there and get lost because some stuff you won't practically understand or care for only after you played for 200 hours. My suggestion is skip the training, get back to it after you have played a lot with the weapon selection and armor they give you its very hard.
Another improvement now is for ps3 users who can connect online via a japanese app and that has opened up some doors to those who do not want to mess with xlink kai connections which are difficult to setup at first for some.
But the best you can get out of this game is playing side by side with 3 more friends and seeing everyone all bringing different armors and weapons to the hunt.
Here's a an old shot of me and some friends at the gathering hall last year.

Re: monster hunter questions
oh i forgot to say that the ps2 version is alittle easier than the psp versions when it comes to the camera. also it's alot more fun since the second stick is used for attacks. but the online is now gone so it's a bitter sweet game.

Re: monster hunter questions
The fandom is intense, I mean there is a partial translation for Tri floating around now. I have only play the Tri demo and goofed off in one of the PSP ones and I believe if I can ever get some friends to buy the same version we will have alot of fun. Also if the dev team ever got ahold of the PSO franchise we would have quite possibly one of the best games ever created.
Too bad there is not a way to lan the PS2 version.

yeah, i was a little dissapointed in the ps2 version's features, so I think i'm going to wait until tri.fast wrote:The fandom is intense, I mean there is a partial translation for Tri floating around now. I got that partial translation that is floating around. Haven't installed it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. If nothing else, the game looks beautiful.
I think having friends online with you is the key to having a good time with that game.
Re: monster hunter questions
Its hard enough to get my friends to play PSO with me, let alone Monster Hunter. They dont even have to buy anything for PSO. Ive got several computers with it installed and the Cube version. Gauntlet on the other hand, ooooh boy. Gauntlet is like crack to some of them.
