Bomberman, what have they done to you!?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Bomberman, what have they done to you!?

Post by racketboy »

Some of you may have seen the awkward modernization of Bomberman for the XBox 360.
If you thought the screenshots were bad, check out the trailer...

Oh the humanity!

1) They ruin a great franchise
2) They look incredibly stupid doing it

Somehow it makes me think of the vision of games shown in early USA NES box art...

Uhm. Have you seen the boxart? It was probably the original vision of the game, but the NES' limited hardware prevented that.

I'm not all for this change, but hey. If it plays well, I'll buy it. Don't be so quick to judge games- I mean, Ninja Gaiden (NES) was just a faster Castlevania, but it was awesome (though hard).

I think the main point here is companies making use of a franchise and delivering something completely unfamiliar/uncharacteristic to fans of the franchise.

Yes, my point is that it doesn't make good business sense to change an established brand so drastically. It doesn't matter if that was their original vision or not. It's the customer's perception that matters.

If they wanted to do something like this, they should call it something like Bomberman DX or some spin-off type name like they did with the Megaman series and all its spinoffs. Then, at least, you have the brand recognition without screwing up the original franchise.

Good points being made here, ones I didn't see easily recognised in other forums/communities.

I made some posts on Defunct Games about this. I could post em here but that'd be a tad redundant, I think.

And, racketboy: isn't that what they're doing? They're calling it "Bomberman Zero." In fact, I don't think there is really a canonical 'main' series for Bomberman. It kind of deteriorates after the first few numbered ones. All the last major ones had unique names. Generations? 64? Hero? Jetters, or whatever the hell it's called?

As far as I can tell, this is a spin-off. Or rather, all Bomberman games themselves are spin-offs.
