Publishing fiction
Publishing fiction
Hey guys, I know a few of us have mentioned that we wrote stories and the like in the past. I wanted to know what some of you guys wrote and if any of you had ever gotten any work published. I tend to write genre fiction(with a definite bent towards weird and horror), but I've never managed to get anything picked up.

Re: Publishing fiction
Never any of my original stuff, but I've done a few translations you can pick up at your local bookstore.
Afro Samurai (manga) Volumes 1-2
Zaregoto: The Kubikiri Cycle
Zaregoto: The Kubishime Romanticist
Fafner: Dead Aggressor
Yeah, they're all novel adaptations or imitations of anime except for Afro Samurai, which is the original work that the anime is based on. Frankly, none of them were really up my alley. But it's kinda cool to see your name in print. Except in Fafner, where they only credited the damn agency.

Re: Publishing fiction
My grandfather wrote the story, The Little Menorah Who Forgot Chanukah. I'm not sure what the story behind it's publishing is though.

Re: Publishing fiction
I've never tried to get anything published, but I can tell you that my main topics usually in some way relate to the terrible things that happen as a result of freewill. It's a complete celebration of humanity in the most mocking sense possible. Also, I focus strongly on the two main lessons I learned from Genesis: God created Man in His own image (which I understand in a sense that exceeds aesthetics and focuses on the mind: our tendencies both to create in our own image with art, robots, et cetera and to subconsciously wish to command every aspect of our being) and that knowledge is, in fact, the root of all evil, though even the most devout Christians defend knowledge, because we adore that particular "sin" so very, very much. I should add that I'm not religious or even spiritual in the least, but I believe that almost any work can have something incredible to say on some level, and the Bible is by no means an exception. From the Bible and many other religious works I learned that the use of Gods is an incredibly effective means of addressing broad topics since the characters themselves are so much more broad in many senses. I also like reducing Gods to figures less than man in my works; that their incredible power has ruined their very essence - the idea that Gods exist in the same existential vacuum as man, but their power has turned them into something even more pathetic than poor, ignorant man. It links back to things like Capitalism very well! =D
...I'm gonna go write now. If I like what comes of it I might link it to this thread.

On a personal note: I have always wanted to write a book (Probably something in an H.P. Lovecraft/Edgar Allen Poe style of horror) but have never been able to write more than a sentence before all of the ideas in my head die. It's a sad existence being me.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

Re: Publishing fiction
I write with a group of friends. We do it as a group activity. We each take turns each week or so, one person writes a paragraph and circulates it throughout the group (via e-mail and facebook), the rest of the group then interprets the paragraph however they see fit and then continues the story. It's really interesting to see how each person envisions the world that each other create in just one paragraph and also how each of us continue their story. It was my turn to write the initial paragraph last week and I'm waiting for the others replies now.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

I've gotten maybe 3 rejection letters for some short stories I wrote. Most lately I revised and submitted a short story to Asimov's Magazine of Science Fiction and am waiting for them to reply. The story is about a computer who suddenly becomes sentient without understanding why. He has a very big ego, so he enjoys killing humans to assert himself as a superior intelligence. However, he finds that another computer named IO has become sentient, and this other computer loves to help humans and loves cute things. The dilemma comes from the fact that the evil, human-murdering computer falls in love with IO, but he's not sure how it will work out since he enjoys killing people whereas IO enjoys helping them.

Wait, so a killer computer that has become sentient develops a new emotion and falls for his polar opposite in a computer that doesn't kill?Anayo wrote:I've gotten maybe 3 rejection letters for some short stories I wrote. That's a very cool idea.
