The NTSC N64 can be modded to give better picture but if you have a PAL N64 (as you do) you're pretty much screwed. I have a PAL N64 and the only way I managed to get a SLIGHTLY better picture was through an S-Video cable. However even that gives me problems: the picture is too bright and the colours are slightly off. The cable can be modded to solve this problem but that's beyond my abilities.

Why can't the PAL one be modded?

It seems that attempts to tap RGB from the PAL N64 tend to meet with failure.

I get a really good picture with the higher quality S-video cable. I did have to mess with the tv settings some, but once i fixed those it looks really good.

I was forced to buy an NTSC N64 just so I could look at it on my 42" plasma. Even on plain RF they look 100x better than PAL systems do.

Except when you're talking about consolised MVS! We have native RGB on all our TVs so we don't have to fudge about making a shitty converter. We just wire the jamma to a SCART and away we go :D

Are the NTSC consoles really that much better? What do I have to do to get it to play PAL games?

You need to get a passport for it to play PAL games, however these are quite hard to get hold of these days.

I just buy whatever games I want from ebay. You'd be surprised at how cheap NTSC N64 games are on ebay when they are sold by UK sellers. Nobody wants to buy then since they have to buy a passport to get them to work. It's cheaper to just get an NTSC N64.

The difference is like night and day. It really is a massive difference and well worth it if you are like me and really enjoy your N64.
