Which would it be? And chronology need not apply. If you want the Beatles or Screamin' Jay Hawkins to do your 2009 video game soundtrack, go ahead!

No, this isn't a favorite bands sort of thread. I love Bad Religion and Minor Threat, but their music just wouldn't translate well into a video game. Too abrasive for adventure and too vocally-driven for action.

That said, I think the Bad Brains would knock it out of the park if it was instrumental only. I've heard takes of them doing Shitfit and Riot Squad without vocals and they could be killer boss themes, really.

Also, I think Polysics could play the part fantastically in a more upbeat title.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: I think more what I should have asked is which band would you like to see compose a full score to a video game, not to be confused with a band simply contributing songs to a soundtrack ala Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.

I've been lucky enough to have some of my favorite artists make video game soundtracks already. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails did the soundtrack to Quake. Amon Tobin did the soundtrack to Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. I guess if Aphex Twin did something, I could die happy.

I don't know if it counts but Richard D James has been featured quite often on the Wipeout series.

Godsmack didn't work because that style of music has never been what Prince of Persia is about. That's a not a very good example to support your argument

When they talked about Brutal Legend on G4's E3 coverage, I could have sworn I heard a song from one of my favorite bands, Iced Earth. Now THAT's a good combination. Heavy Metal game, Heavy Metal music. Too bad Capcom couldn't get a real metal band to replace that generic crap they put in Devil May Cry 3

Warrior Within was exceptionally terrible, I agree - but I hardly think a sample size of one can be used as an argument against the entire idea. I will concede that they usually don't belong, but they might occasionally have their place.

Odd the OP said Bad Religion wouldn't work, then Molotovwars said Offspring were great in Crazy Taxi.

I think certian Hip Hop producers could make scores, some one like Dan the Automator, or Dangermouse, who both produced for Gorillaz, the latter also doing Gnarles Barkley. They could make symphony infused hip hop sound track that could work with almost most games.
