Is it dangerous to run my Xbox anymore?

Post by Kyle »

Hi,
i just bought an used xbox and everything works fine, but I looked at the connection for power supply and saw this:
[img][/img]

the one connector is smaller than the other one and a little brown.
So is it dangerous to run the xbox? Is it possible, that the conole burns or somthing like that?

i can't tell from the photo, but you should probably be fine.

Wasn't there a news story way back when about some kid who burned down his house with his xbox? I think it was from heating up rather than anything electrical like this.

It was actually the cable that was causing fires. They sent out a free replacement to anyone that sent their old one in. It only affected a certain model series though. Mine was one of the affected models and I never sent my cable in for replacement and I've never had a problem with it.

The Xbox just uses a standard figure 8 connector anyway, so you don't have to use a specific Xbox one, any will do. So if you're paranoid, just change it.

That was from the original power cords that came with a hair dryer like test and reset switches on them.

You should be fine, but if it starts to smell like burnt rubber bands or something similar unplug it and look into getting either a new unit or a new power supply.

Ok thanks so far.
Sry for the bad quality, maybe you can see it better here:

The connector on the left side is a little smaller. (How could this happen?!?!)

OHHHHHHH

That looks like someone tried to put in an incorrect cord and forced one of the pins back. In this case I say use it at your own risk, get a new power supply, or get a new unit.

That is odd for the one pin to be shorter. Maybe there was an issue that caused some sort of short that melted part of the pin? It would be good to contact Microsoft to see if your xbox is part of the recall.

You might want to open up the Xbox and check the posts from the power cord inlet. There was a issue on some models with the quality of the solder used on the power inlet posts to the board where it would get loose from plugging and unplugging the console. This would cause a short and a potential fire hazard. Microsoft fixed this by offering a new power cord with a fuse on it. The problem would still short out your Xbox, but help stop a fire hazard, nice way to bandaid poor build quality Microsoft!

oh...shit...and I was so happy to finally play Jet set Radio Future.....
Whatever.....thx anyway

I just looked at the two Power Chords I have. The one has very thick metal connectors inside the two "holes". The other chord doesn't.
So who's the bad one?

I swear to all of you that I have personally seen 3 xboxes when I was in college fail from defective electrical cords. They would short and melt that back of the console near the power plug. I got mine replaced with the large box type cord, really it didn't fix the problem, as the cord connecting to the xbox would still spark at times when you moved it. The large box connector is really just a small breaker that would trip when it felt that electricity amps were running too high across the wire. It got to the point where I replaced my power supply to fix the issue. Mine was a v1.1 if anyone is wondering.
